Zephyr had gone to oversee a rural area, a territory at the edge of the supernatural dominion where the influence of the citadel waned and the wild still held sway. The rustling leaves, and the distant hum of unseen creatures filled the air as he traversed the dense jungle.

Suddenly, amidst the natural symphony, a very light shrill cut through the ambient sounds. Zephyr, with his enhanced hearing, dismissed it initially as a stray noise. However, the second time it reached his ears, he recognized the desperate cry of a child. Without hesitation, he followed the sound, weaving through the foliage until he reached a small stream.

There, hanging from the bank of the fast-flowing water, was a child. Her petite frame, bleeding from a head injury, seemed fragile against the force of the stream. Zephyr's eyes met hers, brown orbs reflecting golden specks, tears streaming down her small face. In that moment, he realized a truth that defied history—this little being, this human child, was his mate.

The revelation hung heavy in the air as he sprinted towards the stream. His coat discarded, Zephyr plunged into the water and swam toward the child. As he approached, the gravity of the situation became apparent. The stream, not deep for him, carried a relentless current that seemed to have ensnared the child against a stubborn stone. The mystery of her predicament baffled him; how had she ended up in this perilous situation?

When he reached her, the child sensed his presence and wept harder. As he grabbed her arm, she clung to him like a koala, her small form wrapped around him, seeking solace. Zephyr, unable to resist the natural protective instinct that surged within him, placed a reassuring palm on her back, trying to comfort her as he swam to the safety of the ground.

Ignoring the concerned guard behind him, Zephyr draped his dry coat over the shivering body of the girl. The child, still clinging to him, had slowed her weeping, but she refused to release her grip. The guard, attempting to take charge, approached once again. Zephyr's voice, laced with a rare hint of fury, halted him in his tracks.

"Your majesty, I'll take this child away," the guard suggested.

Zephyr's eyes flared, and he barked, "DON'T YOU DARE TOUCH HER!"

The guard, wisely, backed away. The girl's weeping gradually subsided as Zephyr continued to hold her. With a heavy sigh, he contemplated the difficulty that lay ahead. How would he explain this unprecedented connection to the others?

The child, now exhausted, succumbed to sleep in his arms, blissfully unaware of the complications she had brought into the intricate tapestry of supernatural rule.
