Jesse Peirce had followed my advice.
I told him that if he didn't tell me the truth then he needed to stay out of my life and he listened to me. I guess I should have been relieved. I mean he was possibly a murderer, he had anger issues, and he was just an all around dangerous person.
I should be happy that he was leaving me alone. I was safe! I was free!
But if I'm being honest with myself... I didn't want him to leave me alone. I didn't want him to just give up on me and move on to the next girl. I wanted him to fight for me.
But he didn't and I hated him for it.
The rest of the week passed by uneventfully. We got assigned to another activity, this time it was team sports. Our first sport was flag football and it was a classic game of boys against girls.
I kept trying to make eye contact with Jesse while we played but he avoided my stare. I purposefully hogged the ball, hoping that Jesse would try to catch me, but he didn't. Tara and I were winning because Jesse refused to come anywhere near me. Finally, I had had enough.
"What is your problem?" I snapped at him as I threw the football down in anger.
"I don't know what you're talking about." Jesse responded in a low voice.
"Like hell you don't! You've been avoiding me since..." I trailed off, finally noticing that we had an audience. "Well, you know." I finished.
"I have nothing to say to you." Jesse retorted and brushed past me.
"Are you guys done with your drama cause I had a game to supervise!" Logan cut in.
"Yeah, we're done." I sighed in defeat.
Once the game was over I quickly strode off the field and headed into the women's locker room. I was changing back into my regular clothes when Tara came inside.
"What happened out there?" She asked me.
"Nothing." I lied and looked down.
"I'm not an idiot Sydney, obviously something hap-"
"Can you just drop it!" I yelled, cutting her off.
Tara was silent for a moment before she finally spoke. "You know I'm only trying to help you. But evidently you're the type of person that has to get burned in order to learn a lesson. Good luck with Jesse, I hope you get exactly what you want."
With that said Tara walked past me, grabbed her clothes from her locker, and left the dressing room. After the fight with Tara, I knew that I couldn't sit next to her at lunch so I sat alone at a table far away from everyone. I had just sat down when Alyssa walked past with some of her counselor friends.
"I tried to warn her that he didn't give a damn about her, but she didn't listen. It's pathetic that she thought she actually had a chance with him." Alyssa giggled as she walked past.
I rolled my eyes and decided (surprisingly) to just ignore her.
"As if Jesse would actually leave you for her!" One of her friends laughed.
When they realized that they weren't going to get a rise out of me, the girls walked away to their table.
Around the end of lunch the announcement bell sounded. I waited for the camp director to say something, but those words never came. Instead a flow of lyrics and a guitar instrumental came on over the air.
Looking for something I've never seen
Alone and I'm in between
The place that I'm from and the place that I'm in
A city I never been
I found a friend or should I say a foe
Said there's a few things you should know
I don't want you to see I come and go
Here today, gone tomorrow
I easily recognized the song as Trust Me by the Fray, but I couldn't recognize the singer. I doubted that the camp decided to put on a rock concert randomly during lunch so I realized that this was someone who hijacked the intercom.
We're only taking turns
Holding this world
It's how it's always been
When you're older you will understand
If I say who I know it just goes to show
You need me less than I need you
But take it from me we don't give sympathy
You can trust me trust nobody
We're only taking turns
Holding this world
It's how it's always been
When you're older you will understand
And then again maybe you don't
And then again maybe you won't
That voice, I recognized that raspy male voice...
We're only taking turns
Holding this world
It's how it's always been
When you're older you will understand
When you're older you might understand
When you're older you might understand
By the time the song ended I had placed the voice. It was Jesse. And I had a feeling that he was singing to me, pleading with me to trust him.Sudddenly a bunch of voices came over the intercom.
"Jesse Peirce! You are in big trouble young man!?" The voice of the camp director shouted.
There was a whole bunch of muffled sounds and more yelling.
"Just let me say one more thing!" I heard Jesse grunt.
"No, let go of the speaker now!"
More shuffling, and then finally
"Meet me at our place, please S-" Abruptly all of the sound shut off.
Immediately the cafeteria broke out in whispers. Most of the girls were talking about how romantic Jesse was and wondering who he was singing to. Without looking in a mirror I could tell that I had a large grin on my face. Jesse wanted me to meet him at Cabin 13 again!I scanned the now loud cafeteria looking for a certain blonde and finally found her with a smile on her face that rivaled mine.
What?
