"I like you" are three simple words to express, surely, but for some reason, they won't pass your lips. If anything, you are struggling to open your mouth, the words just stuck in your throat, not wanting to escape. And that starry, bluish-gray color that is the cause of your happiness and nervousness isn't helping. On any other normal day, the color is sheer comfort, but right now? Certainly not.
Perhaps you're also feeling afraid? Afraid of... rejection? Avoidance? Disgust?
But that can't be... because...
A chuckle from across the table breaks your thoughts, and suddenly, the vibrant chattering, clinking of glasses, and soft, instrumental music is present, filling your senses like a tidal wave. You take in a deep breath, almost desperately, as if you were drowning. Brows furrowed, you prop an elbow on the table, holding your head.
Why are your emotions getting so overwhelmed over this situation...?
"Might I ask why you look troubled?" someone calls out, amusement laced in his voice, "I believe this is a first for the lovely (Y/N) to be under stress. Quite a rare and intriguing sight."
You glance up after some time of silence to yourself, your heart fluttering at his infamous smirk and intent stare, his attention focused on you and solely you despite his favorite Death After Noon resting off to the side. With such a drink nearby, you expected it to get downed as usual.
Ugh, how is he acting so nonchalant about this?! He's excelling in his role ridiculously well with no mistakes. You're just about to break character when he interrupts once more.
"Come now, the Calvary Captain doesn't have all afternoon," he urges in a teasing manner, letting out a half laugh. "You graciously invited me out to the tavern for an important discussion, no?"
You swear he's enjoying this way too much. Sitting up, you find your hand reaching out to hold onto the glass cup for some sort of security (and to hide your evident nervousness). Your fingers are gripping so tightly, you can feel your wrist tightening. It's now or never... everything that is happening right now isn't real. It's merely a play featuring you and the navy blue-haired male.
"K... Kaeya..." you manage to stammer out after an interminable time, starting to feel your hands getting clammy. What is supposed to be a relaxing and joyful environment feels suffocating to you, and your throat is getting dry.
"Hmm...? It's a relief you didn't lose your voice; it would be a shame to not hear that soothing sound again. What have you been wanting to share with me?"
This damn guy and his natural teasing...! You won't be able to finish your jumbled thoughts at this rate. Shutting your eyes, you shake your head. No, just say it and get it over with, for Teyvat's sake! This has been going on for too long. Nothing is real, this moment isn't real, Kaeya's just acting, you're just acting...
"I like you!" you blurt out, your head lowered and eyes still closed.
Honestly, his observations so far with you acting this way is rather cute as he has never seen this side of you before: all flustered and trembling like an autumn leaf that's about to break and drift away into the wind. What makes this more amusing is how you're taking this role play so seriously, as if the one who has captured your heart is him. It's almost flattering, really.
"Is that all?" he murmurs against the rim of the wine glass.
What...? You quickly lift your head up, your widened eyes flickering away in embarrassment. Your heart hurts a bit, perceiving his response to be disinterested. Did you say something wrong...? You want to try again and approach the confession in a different way, maybe asking him out on a date to be more clear?
Kaeya's finger traces the rim slowly, his eyes lowered and gaze unwavering. "Don't look so disappointed. Naturally, I like you too. We do have a strong and unbreakable friendship, after all, wouldn't you agree?"
"Yes..." You take a generous gulp of Dandelion Wine, appreciating the sweet notes that are helping soothe your throat.
"A bit odd to call me out here to say something like that and regard it as important. Forgive me for the lack of expression. I am a little confused by your—"
You interrupt him in exasperation, "I have romantic feelings for you, Kaeya." You didn't intend to sound snappy at all, but you couldn't control yourself since you know he's aware of your immense feelings, and his teasing is causing your emotions to spark.
This whole situation is simply a role play and nothing more, so you can't blame the male for being into his role and fairly playing his part. A few days ago while conversing with Bennett, Razor, and Kaeya himself, Bennett accidentally (just your luck) revealed that you have a crush on a guy and have been hesitant to confess since you didn't know how to go about things. Razor, who also knows of your crush on the cryo user, immediately went to try playing things off in the most awkward way possible, but the unlucky damage has already been done.
Much to all three of your surprises, Kaeya actually offered to meet up with you at Angel's Share so you can have a partner to practice your confession on, which now brings you to this establishment, sitting across from one another under the warm glow of the hanging lights.
"Romantic?" Kaeya repeats, a brow raised. His finger stops abruptly upon hearing your words, moving to rest on his lips in a thoughtful manner. Then, he smiles. "Finally. The feelings are mutual." He picks up his glass and tips it toward you, a sign indicating the end of the role play. "Wasn't so difficult now, was it? How do you feel?"
"In case it wasn't obvious enough, I was on the verge of giving up," you admit with a sigh, your lips pressed together. At least the role play is over. "I definitely can't confess to him anytime soon."
"Is that so? Might I say that..." he trails off, his voice low as he gives you a closed-eyed smile, "...you succeeded perfectly in your confession to me, and rest assured, my feelings are genuine. So, where are we heading to for our first date?"
