The next morning brought an unusual sense of calm to the apartment. Emma and her mother awoke to an empty home—her father was nowhere to be found. The relief was palpable, like a weight lifting off their shoulders. For once, the air didn’t feel thick with tension, and there was no need to tiptoe around the apartment, avoiding his gaze or his unpredictable temper. Emma’s mother sighed softly as she moved around the kitchen, and Emma knew she felt it too—this fleeting moment of peace.
They tackled the living room. The stench from the night before still clung to the sofa, a reminder of her father and the strange woman. Emma grimaced as she scrubbed the fabric, her nose wrinkled in disgust. The sour smell made her stomach churn. She covered her nose with the sleeve of her shirt, trying to block it out as much as possible. Every wipe, every push of the cloth against the sofa, felt like she was scrubbing away not just the dirt but the lingering presence of her father. She could tell her mother felt the same—each of them scrubbing harder, faster, as if cleaning could rid them of the exhaustion that came with living under his shadow.
When they finally finished, the room looked spotless, but the feeling of unease remained, hovering like a ghost. Emma’s mother gave her a small, tired smile, and they shared a moment of silent understanding. There was always a brief calm after the storm, but they both knew it wouldn’t last.
Emma quickly got ready for school, pulling on her Crestwood Academy uniform, her fingers working quickly as her mind drifted to the day ahead. She could already feel the knot tightening in her stomach at the thought of seeing Ethan again. His smug face, his cruel laughter—it all replayed in her head, making her feel small and powerless. She stood in front of the mirror, staring at her reflection, and clenched her fists. For a moment, she closed her eyes and prayed—prayed that he wouldn’t be there today, that maybe, somehow, he would disappear from her life forever.
Please, just let him be gone.
But Emma knew better. Ethan wouldn’t disappear. He’d be there, waiting for her like he always was, ready to mock her, humiliate her. And she would have to endure it, just like she endured everything else. With a deep breath, she grabbed her bag and headed out the door, bracing herself for another day at Crestwood Academy.
As Emma walked toward Crestwood Academy, the morning was cool and quiet, but her mind buzzed with tension. The memory of Ethan’s cruel smirk was still fresh, making her feel exposed and vulnerable. She kept her head down, hoping to make it through the day unnoticed. Just as she rounded a corner, the sound of a car slowing down caught her attention. Her heart leapt into her throat when a sleek car stopped right in front of her, blocking her path.
Fear tightened in her chest as she took a step back, her mind racing with possibilities. Had Ethan sent someone? Was this a new form of torment? But then a voice called out, soft and familiar.
"Emma? Is that you?"
Emma froze for a moment before glancing toward the car. She let out a long, relieved sigh when she recognized Mia, the shy girl from Crestwood whom Emma had once stood up for when Brittany and her clique had targeted her. Mia sat behind the wheel, her large, anxious eyes peering at Emma from under her bangs.
"Thank goodness," Emma whispered to herself, her pulse calming.
Mia gave her a tentative smile. "Hey… um, I saw you walking. Do you need a ride? I could take you to school."
Emma smiled back, trying to keep her voice gentle. "Thanks, Mia, but I’m okay. It’s not a long walk, and I don’t want to trouble you."
But Mia wasn’t one to give up easily. She pushed her glasses up nervously, her hands gripping the steering wheel. "It’s no trouble at all, really. I-I’d feel better if you got in. It’s… it’s not safe walking alone. Please?"
Emma hesitated, feeling a mix of reluctance and kindness toward Mia. She had always been so quiet, so timid, and Emma remembered vividly how scared Mia had been that day when Brittany had cornered her. Seeing Mia now, offering her a ride, was surprising but also heartwarming. Emma didn’t want to make her feel rejected.
With a sigh, she nodded. "Okay, Mia. Thanks, I’ll ride with you."
Mia’s face lit up with relief as Emma climbed into the passenger seat, and she quickly pulled away from the curb. The car ride was a quiet one at first, filled with the soft hum of the engine. Mia stole quick glances at Emma, clearly wanting to say something but too shy to start. Finally, Mia spoke up, her voice soft but eager.
"I’ve been meaning to say… I-I’ve never really thanked you for what you did, you know… with Brittany. You didn’t have to stand up for me, but you did. I still don’t understand why…"
Emma turned to her, surprised by the sudden gratitude. She gave Mia a small, sincere smile. "It was nothing, Mia. No one deserves to be treated like that, especially not you."
Mia blushed a little, looking down at the steering wheel as she drove. "Still, it meant a lot. I don’t know what would’ve happened if you hadn’t been there." She paused, then added in a quieter voice, "It’s just… hard sometimes, being at Crestwood."
Emma knew that feeling all too well. "Yeah, I get it," she said, her voice soft with understanding. "It’s hard for a lot of us."
Mia nodded, the car falling into a more comfortable silence after that. It was clear Mia was shy, but there was a warmth in her words, a gratitude that made Emma feel less alone, at least for that moment. The drive wasn’t long, and soon Crestwood Academy loomed in front of them, its imposing gates reminding Emma of the battle that awaited her inside.
"Thanks for the ride, Mia," Emma said as they pulled up. She gave her a quick smile before stepping out of the car. "I’ll see you in class."
Mia waved shyly, watching as Emma walked toward the school, her eyes lingering with quiet admiration. Emma adjusted her bag and steeled herself for the day ahead, the knot in her stomach returning as she braced for whatever Ethan might throw at her next.
