Emma's pov
As winter settled in, the snowflakes drifting lazily through the crisp air, everything at school seemed to be falling into place for Emma. Despite the growing tension at home, school had become her safe haven. The friendships she had built with Ethan, Mia, Jake, and Ethan’s friends gave her a sense of belonging, something she cherished deeply. They had grown close over the past months, sharing laughs, inside jokes, and late-night study sessions. School life was great, and Emma was eagerly waiting to see her hard work pay off in the form of excellent grades.
But things at home were growing more difficult. The arguments between her parents had worsened, and her father’s temper was like a dark cloud constantly looming over her. Yet Emma kept her head down, determined to succeed. She knew she needed to do well, not just for herself, but for her mother. She wanted to give her the life she deserved, away from the chaos they were trapped in. Day after day, Emma buried herself in her studies, hoping that her excellent results would be the key to a better future.
One thing, though, stood out amidst the cold and the uncertainty. Ethan. He was coming to their diner every day now. It was subtle at first, just a friendly visit here and there, but it became a routine. He would sit at the same booth, order his usual, and chat with her as she served him. There was an undeniable bond forming between them, something deeper than friendship. Emma found herself smiling more when he was around, feeling a flutter in her chest whenever he spoke to her. She couldn’t help but notice how their conversations had started to linger longer, how he always seemed to be checking on her well-being.
It scared her, though. The feelings she had started developing for Ethan were dangerous. She couldn’t afford to let herself get distracted by love, not now. She had a plan—to get the best results, leave this life behind, and take care of her mom. There was no room for anything else. Every time her heart raced when Ethan looked at her or when he’d stay a little longer than necessary at the diner, she reminded herself of that plan.
She was beginning to realize how much she had come to rely on Ethan’s presence, but she buried those feelings deep, locking them away where they wouldn’t interfere. She couldn't let herself be distracted. Love was a luxury she couldn’t afford. Emma told herself she was being ridiculous. She was supposed to be focusing on her studies, on her future, not daydreaming about love or Ethan’s easy smile.
Still, as snow continued to fall and her friendships strengthened, she couldn’t shake the warmth she felt whenever he came by. And every time she saw Ethan walk into the diner, she wondered how long she could keep burying those feelings.
Ethan's povMonths had passed, and it was now winter, the snow blanketing the town in a serene, quiet beauty. School was nearing its end for senior year, and everything seemed to be going smoothly for Emma. Her relationships with Ethan, Mia, Jake, and Ethan's friends had grown stronger over time. Despite the growing tension and worsening situation at home, school had become a safe haven for her, a place where she could breathe and forget about the struggles awaiting her once she returned.
As Emma walked the familiar school halls, snowflakes softly falling outside, she couldn't help but think about her future. She was working hard, determined to achieve excellent results and escape her current life by giving her mom the better life they both desperately needed. The pressure was mounting, but she kept her focus, determined to succeed.
However, amidst all the academic stress and turmoil at home, something else had been brewing within Emma. She couldn’t ignore the bond she had developed with Ethan over the past months. It was subtle at first, but with each day that Ethan came to her family’s diner, something inside her stirred. His presence had become a constant, his face familiar, and his attention unexpectedly comforting.
