As Emma’s mom stepped out from the kitchen, her warm smile instantly brightened the diner. Her hair was a rich chestnut, pulled back into a loose bun, with a few tendrils framing her face. She wore a faded but cheerful apron that spoke of years spent cooking and serving comfort food to their loyal customers.
When she caught sight of Ethan, her expression shifted. A sly smirk spread across her lips as she looked back at Emma, who was standing with her arms crossed and an irritated expression. It was a playful acknowledgment of the handsome boy who had taken an interest in her daughter.
“Good afternoon!” Ethan greeted, his voice smooth and confident. “I just wanted to say how lovely your diner is. It has a real charm to it.”
“Why, thank you!” Emma’s mom replied, her smile widening as she beamed with pride. “It’s nice to see a young man with good taste. And it’s even nicer to see Emma with someone who appreciates what we do here.”
Ethan chuckled, glancing at Emma, who was trying to hide her embarrassment. “You’ve done a fantastic job. The atmosphere is inviting, and the food smells amazing.” He paused, gesturing to the display case. “I might just have to try one of your famous pies.”
Emma’s mom leaned closer, enjoying the attention. “You’ve got good taste, Ethan. My pies are a hit around here. You should come by more often; I’d love to bake you one.”
Emma rolled her eyes, though she couldn’t suppress a small smile at the banter. “Mom, he’s not here for the pies,” she said, trying to regain some control of the situation.
Ethan looked back at her, feigning innocence. “What? I thought we were discussing dessert.”
“Of course, how could I forget?” Emma replied sarcastically, but she couldn’t deny that the light-hearted teasing from both Ethan and her mom was a welcome distraction from her worries.
As Ethan continued to chat with Emma’s mom, complimenting her on the diner’s homey feel, Emma felt a strange sense of comfort in the atmosphere. It was moments like these that reminded her that, despite everything, there were still pockets of happiness to be found.
As the conversation flowed, Emma’s mom began to share stories about the diner’s history, how it had been in their family for generations, and the customers who had become like family. Emma couldn’t help but appreciate the way her mom’s eyes sparkled with enthusiasm, especially when talking about her homemade recipes.
Ethan chimed in, genuinely interested, asking questions about the diner’s specialties and even mentioning that he would love to help out if it meant tasting some of the food. “I could wash dishes or take orders, anything for a slice of that famous pie,” he joked, his smile infectious.
Emma’s mom laughed, clearly pleased with Ethan’s charm. “You’re welcome anytime, Ethan! Just don’t let Emma boss you around. She’s been known to run a tight ship in here,” she teased, shooting a playful glance at her daughter.
Emma felt her cheeks flush, a mix of annoyance and amusement bubbling inside her. “Mom, I don’t boss anyone around! I just…” she hesitated, trying to find the right words, “…have standards.”
Ethan chuckled, leaning back slightly. “I can respect that. Standards are important. Maybe I’ll learn a thing or two from you, Emma.”
Emma shot him a sidelong glance, both annoyed and intrigued by his persistence. “Yeah, well, good luck with that.”
“Don’t worry, I’m a quick learner,” he replied, his eyes sparkling with mischief.
