Chapter Title: The Departure of Everything
Ethan rushed through the door, heart pounding, his mind racing. His mom’s sobs echoed through the house as he threw his bag aside and ran to her. She was sitting on the couch, face buried in her hands, her entire body shaking with grief. He had never seen her like this, and it made his chest tighten with a fear he hadn’t known before.
“Mom, what’s wrong?” His voice cracked as he knelt beside her, gently pulling her hands away from her face.
Her eyes, red and swollen from crying, met his. “Ethan… we… we have to go,” she whispered, her voice trembling.
Ethan felt the ground beneath him tilt. He had known this day was coming, but not like this, not so soon, and not with his mom breaking apart right in front of him. He wrapped his arms around her, trying to offer comfort he wasn’t even sure he had left inside himself.
“I’m here, Mom. We’ll figure this out,” he murmured, though his own heart was breaking.
They stayed like that for a long time, his mother clinging to him as if he was her lifeline. Ethan tried to be strong for her, but inside, he was crumbling. The weight of everything was too much—leaving their home, his mom falling apart, and the crushing reality of saying goodbye to everything they knew.
And then, as if his thoughts automatically sought solace, his mind went to Emma. He pulled away from his mom slightly, reaching into his pocket for his phone.
“I’ll call Emma. She’ll want to know… she’ll understand. Maybe I can see her before—”
But when he called, it went straight to voicemail. He frowned and tried again, only to hear the same automated message.
"Come on, Emma," he whispered to himself. He needed to hear her voice, needed her to help him through this. The thought of leaving without seeing her one last time gnawed at him.
He called again. Nothing.
Frustration built in his chest, mixing with the ache of knowing they had to leave. He tried calling Jake, then Mia—no answer from either of them. Panic flickered in his heart like a dying flame, threatening to consume him.
His fingers hovered over Emma’s number again. He called and called, his hand shaking. But the only answer he got was the silence on the other end. She wasn’t there. She wasn’t picking up. Ethan’s heart sank deeper with every unanswered ring.
“Mom,” he said softly, trying to keep his voice steady, “I need to find Emma.”
His mom looked up at him, her tear-streaked face full of sorrow. “Ethan, we don’t have much time. We need to pack, we need to go…”
“I know, but—” His voice cracked. He didn’t even know how to explain it. Emma was a part of him now, and the idea of leaving without saying goodbye felt unbearable, like a piece of himself was being ripped away.
He tried calling her again, but there was still no answer. The more he called, the more the helplessness sank into his bones, turning his despair into a quiet, suffocating storm. He sat back down, his fingers digging into his hair as he stared blankly at his phone.
She wasn’t coming. He wasn’t going to see her before they left.
The thought crushed him. He had so much he wanted to say, so much he needed her to know. Ethan could feel himself unraveling as he realized that everything he cared about was slipping through his fingers, and he was powerless to stop it.
His mom’s voice broke through his thoughts. “Ethan, we need to get ready… please.”
He swallowed hard, nodding, though his heart wasn’t in it. He stood up slowly, feeling the weight of every step as he went to his room. His hands shook as he packed, his mind still caught on Emma—where was she? Why wasn’t she answering? Didn’t she know he needed her?
Each item he placed in his bag felt like a final goodbye to the life he knew. His friends. His school. His home. But most of all, Emma. The girl he had come to care for more than he ever thought possible, the girl who had become the brightest part of his life, even in the middle of all his own chaos.
As he zipped his bag closed, the reality of leaving without her hit him like a punch to the gut. He sat on the edge of his bed, his head in his hands, trying to breathe through the ache in his chest. How could everything be falling apart so fast?
He called Emma one last time. Again, there was no answer.
His heart sank lower than he thought it could go, the pain of losing her—without even knowing why—tearing him apart from the inside. He could feel the tears threatening to spill, but he forced them back. He couldn’t break down. Not yet.
But as he helped his mom with the last of their things, the silence stretched, heavy and oppressive. He could hear her sob quietly beside him, and the weight of their collective grief pressed down on him like a crushing wave.
“Ethan,” she whispered as they stood by the door, her voice trembling. “I’m so sorry.”
He nodded, not trusting himself to speak. He was sorry too. Sorry for leaving. Sorry for everything that was lost. And most of all, sorry that he couldn’t reach Emma.
As they left the house, the one that had held their memories and lives for so long, Ethan’s heart broke all over again. He couldn’t shake the feeling that he was leaving a part of himself behind—and that he might never get it back.
And as they drove away, he stared at his phone, willing it to ring, to show Emma’s name on the screen, to give him some shred of hope. But it didn’t.
