Jake stood outside the hospital door, his mind spinning as the weight of everything he had just heard sank in. The truth about Emma’s past hit him harder than he could have ever imagined. Every word Clara spoke, every tear Emma shed, echoed in his mind. He couldn’t shake the image of Emma, the strong girl he had come to admire, being crushed under years of pain and suffering.

He leaned against the wall, his face pale, hands trembling. Emma had endured so much—far more than he ever knew. How had she survived all of it? The abuse, the lies, the torment of living under a roof where love had turned to hatred. He could barely wrap his head around the thought of Emma, the girl he cared for so deeply, facing such horrors. And now, her world had been shattered again, learning the truth about her real mother.

His phone vibrated in his pocket, pulling him out of his thoughts. It was Ethan. Jake stared at the screen for a moment, torn between answering and ignoring the call. He knew Ethan had no idea what was happening, but Jake also knew that Ethan loved Emma too, and in a way that made Jake feel... threatened.

He hesitated, then answered, his voice low. "Yeah?"

"Jake! Where’s Emma?" Ethan’s voice was laced with panic. "I’ve been calling her, but she’s not answering. What’s going on? Is she okay?"

Jake closed his eyes, torn between telling Ethan the truth and protecting Emma in the only way he thought he could. He couldn’t bear the idea of Ethan rushing back into her life, stirring up more confusion when Emma was already breaking apart. No, he had to be the one to protect her, to be there for her. He had to keep Ethan away.

"Emma doesn’t need you, Ethan," Jake said, his voice cold and flat. "She’s with me."

Ethan paused on the other end, confused. "What  the fuck are you talking about? I just need to talk to her. Put her on the phone."

Jake’s grip tightened on the phone. His mind raced, guilt tugging at him, but he pushed it down. "She doesn’t want to talk to you."

"What?" Ethan’s voice sharpened. "That’s not true. Put her on, Jake. I want to hear her say that."

"She told me she doesn’t want to talk to you, Ethan. You should just stop calling," Jake lied, his heart pounding in his chest. "Emma’s... she’s with me now. We’re together."

There was a long silence on the other end. Jake could hear Ethan breathing, the disbelief and hurt building in his voice. "Jake,  don’t lie to me. Give the phone to her. I want her to say it to my face."

"I’m not lying," Jake snapped, feeling a surge of anger, though it was more at himself than at Ethan. "She said she doesn’t need you, Ethan. You’re just going to make things worse for her."

Ethan’s voice cracked with desperation. "Please, Jake. Let me talk to her. I need to know she’s okay."

"She’s fine," Jake said, his voice hardening, though inside he felt a wave of guilt washing over him. "She doesn’t want to talk to you."

"Jake!" Ethan shouted, his voice breaking with frustration. "Give her the fucking  damn phone!"

Jake’s jaw tightened, and without another word, he hung up. His hand trembled as he lowered the phone, guilt gnawing at him. He knew what he had done was wrong, but he convinced himself that it was the only way to protect Emma. He believed that Ethan wouldn’t understand, that only he could truly be there for her now.

Inside the room, Emma’s sobs had quieted, but the pain still hung heavy in the air. Jake stood there, wrestling with the weight of his decision, knowing that in trying to protect her, he might have just made things worse. But one thing was clear in his mind—he wasn’t going to let anyone, not even Ethan, take Emma away from him.

As for Ethan, standing at the airport, staring at his phone in disbelief, he felt his heart shatter. The desperation in his voice hadn’t been enough to reach Emma, and now, all he could do was board the plane, feeling a deep sense of helplessness and betrayal.

As Ethan stood in the bustling airport, surrounded by the noise of travelers and announcements, the world seemed to blur around him. The phone in his hand felt cold, heavy with the weight of Jake’s words. His pulse pounded in his ears, and a sense of dread settled deep in his chest. He couldn’t believe it—couldn’t believe that Emma wouldn’t want to talk to him, that she was with Jake. The thought made his heart ache with a pain he hadn’t known was possible.

"She’s with me now."

The words echoed in his mind, each repetition twisting the knife deeper into his gut. Ethan’s grip on the phone tightened as his throat clenched, tears stinging his eyes. He had called Jake for answers, for reassurance, but instead, he felt more lost than ever. Was everything he thought he shared with Emma just in his head? Had he been a fool all this time?

His vision blurred as the tears that had been building up finally spilled over. He turned his head slightly, wiping his eyes with the back of his hand, trying to regain control, but it was no use. The tears came faster now, a flood of emotion he could no longer hold back. His chest heaved with silent sobs as his world seemed to crumble in a way he hadn’t expected.

He had always been strong, never the one to break down, but now, in the middle of the airport, Ethan was reduced to a man broken by love, betrayal, and fear. He wasn’t even sure why he was crying—was it for Emma? For himself? For the thought of losing her to Jake? Maybe it was all of it. But the pain was too much, overwhelming him in waves he couldn’t stop.

Then, with a surge of anger and helplessness, he crushed the phone in his hand. His grip tightened until the screen cracked with a sharp, piercing sound, the glass splintering under the pressure of his fingers. He didn’t care. He didn’t care about anything at that moment. All he wanted was to hear Emma’s voice, to know that she was okay. But Jake had taken that from him too.

With a choked sob, Ethan threw the shattered phone onto the floor, where it skidded across the cold tiles, broken and useless. People around him glanced over, but he didn’t care about the looks or the stares. His world had just collapsed, and all he could do was stand there, in the middle of the airport, his heart shattered into pieces.

The tears continued to fall, his chest tight with grief, as he tried to process what had just happened. He had always been able to protect her, to be there for her, but now... now she was slipping away. And he felt powerless to stop it.
