Chapter Title: The Truth We Buried

Emma sat frozen in her hospital bed, staring blankly at the woman who claimed to be her real mother. The weight of Clara's words crashed down on her, each sentence hitting harder than the last. She was angry, confused, and utterly shattered. It was as though her entire world had been nothing but lies, carefully constructed and hidden from her all these years.

But despite the whirlwind of emotions raging inside her, all she could think about was her mother—the woman who had raised her, the woman who had suffered alongside her, who had held her when everything fell apart, and who was now lying in a hospital bed, fighting for her life.

Emma's eyes filled with tears, her voice barely a whisper. "I don’t care about you. The only mother I care about is the one who’s dying right now."

Clara flinched at Emma's words, her eyes welling up with tears. But Emma wasn’t done. She felt her throat tighten, her breath coming in shallow gasps as memories began to flood her mind—memories of all the suffering she and her mother had endured.

"You don’t understand what we’ve been through," Emma continued, her voice breaking. "My mom… she’s the one who was there. Not you. She’s the one who took care of me when my dad started hating me, when he started drinking and hurting us. She was the one who tried to protect me, even though she couldn’t protect herself."

Clara’s face crumpled as she listened, her heart breaking for the child she had given away, the daughter she had watched from afar but could never truly protect.

"I never wanted to hurt you," Clara whispered. "I—"

Emma cut her off, shaking her head furiously. "You weren’t there! You didn’t have to live through it! You didn’t have to watch as my father—the man who used to love me—turned into someone who could barely look at me. He hated me because I wasn’t perfect, because I wasn’t the daughter he wanted."

Her voice trembled as she continued, memories she had buried for so long now clawing their way to the surface. "He almost killed us, you know? Me and my mom… he threw a bottle at me once, and I had to lie to everyone about why I was wearing bandages on my wrist. But that didn’t matter because I had my mom. She was the one thing that kept me going."

Clara’s hand flew to her mouth, her tears flowing freely now. "I… I didn’t know. I couldn’t have imagined…"

But Emma wasn’t listening anymore. She was lost in the memories, the pain overwhelming her as the flashbacks consumed her.

Clara was 19 when she found out she was pregnant, fear gripping her heart as she stared at the positive test in her hands. Her family was wealthy, powerful, and unforgiving. The idea of a child out of wedlock was unthinkable, a disgrace they wouldn’t tolerate.

She couldn’t bring herself to tell her parents. They would have forced her to do something she couldn’t live with—terminate the pregnancy, erase the "mistake" before it ruined their family's pristine reputation. But Clara couldn't do it. She couldn’t kill her baby.

So she kept the pregnancy a secret, hiding it as long as she could. When the time came, her distant cousin Lara—who had been married for years but couldn’t conceive—became her way out. Clara's parents suggested Lara could raise the child as her own, sparing the family any shame.

But then, the unthinkable happened. When Lara gave birth to her own child, it died shortly after. Clara had already promised her baby to Lara, and with nowhere else to turn, she followed through, giving her newborn daughter to Lara and leaving, her heart shattered.

Five years later…

Clara stood outside the house where her daughter, now named Emma, lived. She had watched from afar, never daring to come too close, but on Emma’s fifth birthday, she couldn’t resist any longer.

She waited until Lara’s husband, David, wasn’t around before knocking on the door. Lara answered, surprised to see her, but she invited Clara inside. They sat at the kitchen table, both women tense, the weight of their shared secret hanging heavily between them.

Clara’s eyes followed the sounds of a little girl giggling from the next room, her heart aching. That was her daughter, her baby. She had given her up so she could have a better life, but watching her now… it hurt in ways she hadn’t expected.

"I needed to see her," Clara whispered, her voice thick with emotion. "I just… I needed to know she’s happy."

Lara gave her a sad smile, her eyes softening with understanding. "She’s a wonderful little girl. David adores her, and she… she doesn’t know anything."

"I’m glad," Clara said, but her heart broke a little more with every word. "I’ve watched her from a distance for so long… I just wanted to be sure."

As they spoke, neither of them realized David had come home early. He stood outside the kitchen, listening, his face growing pale as he overheard the conversation.

Lara was explaining to Clara how they had kept the secret from David, how he believed Emma was his biological daughter. The pain of their words hit David like a sledgehammer. His heart pounded in his chest as the truth sunk in—Emma wasn’t his.

Present Day…

Emma’s chest heaved as she cried, the weight of the past suffocating her. She could still see her father’s face the day he found out the truth—the way his love for her evaporated, replaced by resentment and anger. That was the day he started drinking, the day he started hurting them both.

"I hate him," Emma whispered, her voice breaking. "But I don’t know how to stop loving him. He was my dad, and now… now he’s the reason my mom is dying."

Clara’s face was streaked with tears as she listened, her heart breaking for the daughter she had never truly known. She reached out, wanting to comfort Emma, but Emma recoiled, shaking her head.

"You’re not my mother," she whispered, her voice laced with pain. "You left me. You don’t get to call yourself my mom now. My real mom is lying in a hospital bed, and she’s the only one who matters to me."

Clara’s sobs echoed in the small room, her grief mixing with Emma’s, but Emma couldn’t bear to look at her anymore. She turned away, burying her face in her hands as she wept, the pain too much to hold inside.

Her heart ached for the mother she had known, the one who had sacrificed everything for her, the one who had loved her despite all the suffering. That was her mother—the only mother she would ever accept.

And Clara, broken and devastated, could do nothing but watch as her daughter slipped further away, knowing she could never undo the past, never erase the choices she had made.
