Six years later
Six years had passed, but for Emma, the ache of the past still lingered, settled deep within her heart. She gazed out her bedroom window, watching the rain streak down, mirroring the tears she refused to shed. Her fake mother—no, her real mother in every way that mattered—had told her to forgive Clara, to let the past go. Yet, the loss of Ethan haunted her even more than the pain of her fractured family.
Every memory of him, every glimpse of the life they could have shared, gnawed at her. The fact that he had left without a word felt like a dagger that twisted with every passing day. Jake had told her that Ethan had left the country, that he’d moved on as if she were nothing but a distant memory. Emma had forced herself to believe it, to accept that maybe her love for him had never been reciprocated in the way she’d dreamed.
But as the rain drizzled on, washing over the city, the truth was hard to silence—she had never stopped loving him. Even in his absence, even as the years slipped by, Ethan remained in the shadows of her mind. She whispered his name sometimes, alone in the quiet, feeling the emptiness of a love that was never given the chance to bloom. All she could wonder was why. Why hadn’t he told her he was leaving? Why had he abandoned her without a goodbye, without a single explanation? The pain of that unanswered question weighed heavy on her heart.

Across the world, Ethan sat in his luxurious, cold office, surrounded by wealth and power but haunted by emptiness. Despite the success he’d fought for, his heart was bound to a memory that refused to fade. Late at night, when he was alone with his thoughts, he let himself remember her—the way she’d laughed, the way her eyes had sparkled even in her hardest times, how she had made him feel like he belonged somewhere.
But the memory of that phone call with Jake was like salt on a wound that never healed. The image of her choosing someone else haunted him, the finality of Jake’s words echoing through his mind even after all these years: “She doesn’t need you, Ethan. She’s with me now.” Those words had crushed him then, and they still cut him to pieces. He had believed Jake, convincing himself he was doing the right thing by staying away. But every day, the what-ifs grew louder. What if she hadn’t moved on? What if Jake’s words had been a lie?
Yet, he’d never reached out, holding back out of fear that the pain would only deepen if he discovered the truth. His life was polished on the outside, powerful and controlled, but in his heart, there was only chaos and regret. He wondered if she’d ever think of him the same way, if she’d ever look back on their time with the same yearning. But no matter what he did, he couldn’t escape the longing or the love he had tried—and failed—to bury.

In a dimly lit club across town, Jake sat hunched over a drink, surrounded by the noise and laughter of his friends, yet feeling more alone than ever. His friends laughed, nudging him playfully, pointing out a girl across the room who had been watching him all night. One of them leaned over, chuckling, “Come on, Jake, why don’t you go talk to her? Don’t tell me you’re still scared of girls.”
Jake forced a weak smile, shaking his head. “Not interested,” he muttered, his voice laced with sadness.
Another friend raised an eyebrow, teasing him. “Not interested? You’ve been like this for years, man. Come on, what’s got you so caught up that you won’t even look at another girl?”
Jake hesitated, gripping his glass tighter as he looked away, the confession spilling out of him in a defeated whisper. “I’m in love,” he admitted, his voice thick with sorrow.
The guys laughed, thinking he was joking. “Jake in love? Since when?”
Jake managed a sad, hollow smile. “The girl I love… she’s in love with someone else. Has been, for a long time now.”
There was a moment of silence, the laughter fading as his friends took in the gravity of his words. But Jake didn’t stay for any pity or sympathy. Excusing himself, he slipped outside, letting the cool rain soak him to the bone. Standing under the pouring sky, he tilted his head back, feeling the raindrops mingle with the tears slipping down his cheeks. His lips trembled, a bitter smile touching his face as he let out a shaky breath.
The rain disguised his tears, yet he felt as exposed as ever, the pain of loving someone he could never have washing over him in waves. He had lied to Ethan years ago, stolen the chance for Emma and Ethan to be together, all because he thought he could protect her, that he could make her happy himself. But the truth hurt more than any wound—she had never been his to protect. And now, after all the time that had passed, he was still here, drenched in rain and regret, haunted by a love that could never be returned.
