Emma's eyelids fluttered open, the sterile smell of antiseptic filling her nostrils as the whitewashed walls of the hospital room came into view. The soft beeping of machines was the only sound breaking the heavy silence. Her head pounded relentlessly, but it was a dull ache compared to the panic surging through her chest.
Jake sat beside her, his face drawn and pale, his eyes red and puffy from crying. Relief washed over him as soon as he saw her stir. "Emma, you're awake," he whispered, reaching for her hand.
But Emma barely registered his presence. Her mind was elsewhere, racing back to that moment—her mother, lying motionless on the floor. “Where’s my mom?” Her voice cracked, dry and hoarse, and she struggled to sit up, despite the sharp pain that shot through her skull.
"Emma, you need to rest—"
"Where’s my mom, Jake?" she interrupted, her voice louder this time, panic rising. She pulled her hand from his grasp and tried to swing her legs over the side of the bed, though her body protested. Her head felt like it was splitting apart, but she didn’t care. She needed to see her. She needed to know if her mom was alive.
"Emma, stop!" Jake stood, grabbing her arm gently but firmly. "You’ve been through a lot. You can’t just get up like this."
"I have to!" she cried, her voice breaking. Tears welled in her eyes, blurring her vision. "Please, Jake, I need to see her." Her voice was laced with desperation, a plea that shook Jake to his core.
He hesitated, torn between wanting to protect her and knowing she wouldn’t stop until she saw her mother. "Let me get the nurse, okay? Just... wait a second."
Jake reluctantly left the room, and as soon as the door clicked shut behind him, Emma slid out of bed, every movement sending waves of nausea and pain through her body. Her head swam, but she gritted her teeth and steadied herself, grabbing onto the IV pole for support. She staggered out into the hallway, her legs trembling beneath her.
A nurse noticed her struggling and quickly approached. "Miss, you shouldn’t be up—"
"Please," Emma gasped, her voice a whisper. "Where’s my mom? What room is she in?"
The nurse’s face softened with understanding, her eyes filled with pity. She guided Emma gently down the hall, toward a room at the far end. Emma’s heart raced, fear gnawing at her insides. Her mother had to be okay. She couldn’t lose her. Not now. Not like this.
When they reached the door, the nurse paused. "She’s in here. But I need you to understand—"
"I need to see her," Emma choked out, pushing the door open before the nurse could finish.
The sight that greeted her made her knees buckle. Her mother lay motionless in the hospital bed, an oxygen mask covering her face, tubes and machines surrounding her fragile body. Her chest rose and fell slowly, too slowly, and her pale skin was almost translucent against the stark white sheets. Her eyes were closed, her face bruised and swollen from the attack, and the rhythmic hiss of the ventilator was the only sign that she was still alive.
Emma’s world crumbled at that moment. The pain in her head, the weakness in her body—it all disappeared beneath the weight of her grief. She collapsed at her mother’s bedside, clutching her hand as sobs wracked her body. “Mom,” she whispered, her voice breaking. "Please wake up. Please." Tears streamed down her face, her heart breaking into a million pieces. "I’m so sorry. I couldn’t protect you. I wasn’t there. I should’ve been there."
Her mother didn’t stir. The only sound was the steady beep of the machines, a cruel reminder that her mother was slipping further and further away. Emma’s fingers shook as she stroked her mother’s hand, feeling the coldness of her skin. She buried her face in the sheets, her sobs uncontrollable now. "I can’t lose you. I can’t."
She didn’t know how long she stayed there, crying until her body had no more tears left to give. Her heart felt hollow, the pain too great to bear. Everything felt like it was falling apart.
And then, through the haze of her grief, she heard a voice—soft, gentle, but unfamiliar. "Emma."
She froze, her breath catching in her throat. Slowly, she lifted her head, her tear-filled eyes searching the room for the source of the voice. Standing near the doorway was a woman—a woman she had never seen before but felt a strange pull toward. The woman’s eyes were filled with sorrow, and there was something almost haunting about her presence, like she had been watching from afar for years, waiting for this moment.
"Who... who are you?" Emma’s voice trembled, barely above a whisper.
The woman stepped closer, her expression tender but sad. "I’ve been waiting to see you, Emma. To tell you the truth."
Emma’s heart raced. The room seemed to spin, her mind struggling to process what was happening. "What truth?"
But before the woman could answer, Emma’s vision blurred again. Her body, already weak from the pain and grief, couldn’t take any more. The weight of the night’s events crashed down on her all at once. Her legs gave out, and the last thing she heard before the darkness consumed her was the woman calling her name once more.
"Emma."
