She lifted her head, her tear-streaked face looking toward the door, and there stood the mysterious woman. The woman stepped inside the room, her expression unreadable but full of emotion. Emma’s world spun, her vision darkening as she felt the floor slip away beneath her.

She fainted again.

When Emma woke this time, her body felt even heavier, the weight of reality pressing down on her chest. She blinked, disoriented, trying to focus. Jake was still beside her, his eyes full of worry, but so was tnhe woman—standing there, looking at her with a strange mixture of sadness and tenderness. Emma’s head still pounded, but the dull ache was nothing compared to the pain in her heart.

"Emma, here," Jake said softly, offering her another glass of water.

She took it, but her thoughts were far from the room, far from the people around her. She could only think about her mom, lying in that hospital bed, motionless, her life hanging by a thread. After a few moments, the woman stepped forward, her gaze never leaving Emma. "I need to speak with her," the woman said, her voice trembling slightly. "Alone."

Jake looked at Emma, hesitant, unwilling to leave her. “Are you sure?”

Emma barely nodded, too emotionally drained to respond with words. After a long, reluctant pause, Jake finally stood, his eyes lingering on her for a moment longer before he turned and left the room.

The woman sat beside Emma’s hospital bed, her hands trembling slightly as she reached out as if to touch Emma’s cheek. But at the last moment, she withdrew, her hand falling back into her lap. A soft sob escaped her lips as she lowered her head.

For a long moment, there was only silence. Then, the woman spoke, her voice shaking with emotion. "Emma… there’s something I need to tell you." She paused, as if gathering the courage to continue. Tears welled up in her eyes, but she blinked them away, her lips trembling. "You deserve to know the truth... I should’ve told you sooner, but I was afraid. Afraid of how you’d see me… of how it would change everything."

Emma stared at her, confused, her heart racing with fear. "What are you talking about?"

The woman’s voice cracked. "Emma... I’m not just a stranger." She hesitated again, the words heavy on her tongue. "I’m… I’m your mother."

The room seemed to spin around Emma as the woman’s words echoed in her mind. She couldn’t breathe, couldn’t think, couldn’t comprehend what she had just heard.

The woman’s tears fell freely now, and she covered her face with her hands, crying softly. "I’m so sorry, Emma… I’m so, so sorry."
