Mia's POV
The gym was a swirl of glittering lights and laughter, but I felt like I was standing still in the midst of it all. The winter dance was supposed to be a night to remember, but my heart felt heavy as I waited for Emma and Ethan to arrive.
I glanced at the entrance again, but they were still nowhere in sight. My gaze drifted to Jake, leaning against the wall, looking like he belonged on a magazine cover. He was talking to some friends, but his mind seemed elsewhere. I felt a familiar twinge of longing, mixed with the sharp sting of jealousy. I’d liked Jake for as long as I could remember, but it was clear that his heart belonged to someone else.
I swallowed hard, trying to ignore the bitter taste in my mouth. I knew Jake cared about Emma; it was in the way he looked at her, how his smile widened whenever she walked into the room. It was painfully obvious, even if he hadn’t said the words out loud. And here I was, fighting a losing battle with feelings I couldn’t control.
“Hey, Mia!” My friend Claire called, pulling me back to reality. “You okay? You look a little out of it.”
“Yeah, just... waiting for Emma,” I replied, forcing a smile. “You know how it is.”
Claire nodded, but I could tell she sensed something was off. I was always the cheerful one, but tonight, my heart felt like a heavy stone. I stole another glance at Jake, who was now laughing with his friends, the sound warm and inviting. I wanted to be part of that laughter, but the thought of him with Emma made me feel like an outsider in my own skin.
“I’ll be right back,” I said, suddenly needing to escape the noise. I slipped away from the crowd and headed outside, taking a deep breath of the crisp winter air. The cold felt refreshing, grounding me amid the chaos.
But even outside, my thoughts spiraled back to Jake. He was everything I wanted—kind, funny, and so effortlessly charming. I hated how my heart fluttered whenever he smiled at me, knowing it would never be enough.
As I leaned against the wall, I heard the faint strains of music from inside. I thought about how Jake probably wished he could be with Emma tonight, laughing and dancing together. I squeezed my eyes shut, forcing back the swell of emotions threatening to spill over. It wasn’t fair to feel this way, knowing he was drawn to someone else.
“Hey, there you are!” Claire’s voice cut through my thoughts as she joined me outside. “You okay? You seem really out of it tonight.”
“Just... trying to sort through some stuff,” I admitted, crossing my arms tightly. I wanted to confide in her, to let her know about my feelings for Jake, but the words stuck in my throat.
“Want to talk about it?” she asked gently, her eyes soft with concern.
“Not really,” I replied, forcing a smile. “I just feel a little... lost, I guess.”
Claire frowned slightly, sensing my struggle but letting it go for now. “Well, if you need me, I’ll be inside. I just hope Emma gets here soon. It’s not the same without her.”
“Yeah, me too,” I said, forcing cheer into my voice. As she went back inside, I stayed outside a moment longer, letting the cold air bite at my skin. I wished I could be happy for Emma and Jake, but how could I when it hurt so much?
The door opened again, and I saw Jake step out, his gaze sweeping the area until it landed on me. “Hey, I was looking for you,” he said, his voice warm and inviting.
“Just needed a breather,” I replied, forcing my best smile. “How’s it going in there?”
“Loud,” he chuckled, rubbing the back of his neck. “But it’s fun. Are you okay? You seemed a little... off.”
I hesitated, wishing I could just tell him everything—the way my heart raced around him, how I felt like I was losing him to Emma. But instead, I shook my head. “Yeah, I’m fine. Just thinking.”
“About what?” he pressed, his eyes searching mine. I felt my cheeks heat up, and I wanted nothing more than to lean closer, to be the girl he cared about.
“Just... the dance, I guess. I want it to be a good night for everyone,” I replied, my voice barely above a whisper.
“Me too,” he said softly, and for a moment, it felt like he understood, like we were sharing a secret. But then his expression shifted, and I could see him looking back towards the gym.
“Come on, let’s go back in. Emma and Ethan will be here soon,” he said, pushing off the wall.
As we walked back, I felt a mixture of hope and despair. I wanted to be brave enough to tell him how I felt, but I knew deep down that Jake’s heart was already promised to someone else. Maybe tonight would be the night I finally had to accept it—that I would always be just a friend in his eyes.
