: Snowy Confessions
It was a snowy morning at school, the air crisp and filled with the promise of winter. Flurries danced outside the tall windows, coating the world in a soft blanket of white. As Emma arrived, the chill seemed to seep into her bones, reflecting the strange hollow feeling she’d carried since her unexpected reunion with Jake and the emotions stirred by Ethan.
Pushing through the school doors, she could feel the weight of the weekend’s thoughts pressing down on her. She wasn’t just battling the cold—she was battling the feelings she was trying so hard to bury. But when she saw Ethan leaning against a locker, that familiar warmth crept in despite her efforts to keep it at bay.
Ethan looked up as she approached, and his worried eyes softened into a smile. “You’re not wearing a hoodie again,” he scolded gently, though his voice was warmer than the cold air surrounding them.
Emma shrugged, trying to act indifferent. “Didn’t feel like it,” she said, avoiding his gaze.
Without hesitation, Ethan reached into his bag and pulled out the hoodie he had bought for her, the one she hadn’t worn yet. “Here. You’ll freeze without it. And I can’t have you catching a cold, can I?”
Their fingers brushed as she took it, and her heart skipped a beat, but she quickly reminded herself that she couldn’t afford to let her feelings for him grow. Ethan was becoming a bigger part of her life than she had ever intended, but her focus needed to stay on her responsibilities, her family. Falling for him was dangerous—she couldn’t risk getting distracted by love.
Ethan smiled, though it didn’t fully reach his eyes. His mind was still swirling with thoughts from the weekend—the conversation with his mom, the news about his dad’s accident, and the fact that his family might have to move overseas after he graduated. He couldn’t stop thinking about how much the idea of leaving Emma behind terrified him. As they walked to class together, he was both trying to be present with her and grappling with how he could leave her without even telling her how he truly felt.
Meanwhile, Emma’s heart was heavy. She knew she needed to focus on her life, on helping her mom, but every moment with Ethan made that harder. It was getting impossible to ignore the way he looked at her, the warmth in his smile, the way he seemed to always be there for her. She sighed inwardly, determined to bury her feelings before they became too obvious.
They entered the classroom, and almost immediately, Emma saw Jake standing near his locker. His eyes found her, and he gave her a small, hesitant smile. Emma felt the weight of their complicated history settling in again, and she quickly looked away. Mia, standing not too far from Jake, noticed the interaction and felt a familiar pang of jealousy. The tension between Emma and Jake hadn’t gone unnoticed, and Mia couldn’t shake the feeling that Jake’s heart wasn’t hers.
All through the morning classes, the tangled web of emotions wound tighter. Ethan couldn’t stop thinking about what his mother had told him and how Emma would react if she knew. Jake’s thoughts kept drifting back to Emma, his heart aching for the connection they once had. Mia, on the other hand, couldn’t stop thinking about Jake and how distant he’d become since Emma re-entered the picture.
By lunchtime, the snow was falling heavier outside, and the cafeteria buzzed with noise. Ethan, Emma, Jake, and Mia found themselves sitting together, though the air between them was thick with unspoken feelings.
“So,” Mia said after a few moments of uncomfortable silence, trying to break the tension. “What kind of girls do you like, Ethan?” she asked, her voice light, though there was a deeper meaning behind her question. She was hoping to steer the conversation away from the tension she was feeling and maybe ease her growing insecurities about Jake and Emma.
