It had almost been a month since the accident, and each day felt like a battle. The physical pain was gradually fading, but the emotional scars lingered like a shadow, always hovering just out of sight. I could feel myself slowly returning to a sense of normalcy, yet the weight in my heart grew heavier with each passing day. I knew it was time to share everything with Ethan. He had been my rock throughout my recovery, taking care of me in ways I never expected. I owed him the truth.
As we sat together on the couch, the soft glow of the lamp cast a warm light around us, creating a cozy cocoon that felt both safe and stifling. My heart raced as I prepared to speak. "Ethan," I began, my voice shaky, "I think I'm ready to tell you what happened. All of it."
He turned to me, his dark eyes steady and patient, encouraging me to continue with a slight nod. I could sense his worry, and it made the knot in my stomach tighten.
"After we met at the café," I started, recalling that seemingly innocent moment that had spiraled into chaos, "Jace saw us together. That night when I went to his apartment... it was a mess." I paused, searching for the right words, but the memories were overwhelming. "Jace was so angry, so jealous of everything. I tried to explain that nothing happened between us, that it was just coffee, but he wouldn't listen. He stormed out of the apartment."
Ethan's jaw tightened, and I could see the anger boiling beneath the surface. My heart ached at the thought of how my words were affecting him. I didn't want to put him in this position, but I knew I had to be honest.
"In the car, everything went so fast," I continued, my voice trembling. "I begged him to stop, but he just kept driving. I was terrified, Ethan. It felt like I was screaming inside, and no one could hear me. I kept calling out Jace's name, hoping he would come to his senses, but he didn't. When the accident happened..." My breath hitched as the memories flooded back. "It was all so hard. I felt like my life was slipping away, and I couldn't move. I thought I was going to die right there."
The tears began to stream down my cheeks, and I struggled to control my sobs. "He was there... he told me everything would be okay. But then, he just left me. He turned his back on me and ran away. He left me there to die."
I broke down completely, sobbing uncontrollably against Ethan's shoulder. I felt the warmth of his body enveloping me, providing a sense of comfort I desperately needed. He held me tightly, allowing me to pour out my pain, and I could feel the tension in his body as he processed my words.
"Ivy," he said softly, his voice steady despite the storm brewing inside him. "You have to understand that what Jace did was unforgivable. He abandoned you when you needed him the most. That's not love. You deserve so much more than that."
"But I just..." I cried, my heart aching. "Was I not good enough for him? Did he hate me that much?" The questions spilled out, each one heavier than the last. I felt so lost, so confused about everything that had happened.
"Look, you didn't do anything wrong," he reassured me, his frustration with Jace evident. "Jace was too caught up in his own issues to see how much he hurt you. It's not about you. It's about him being a coward."
As I absorbed his words, a flicker of hope ignited within me, yet it was quickly overshadowed by the pain of betrayal I felt. Just then, something took over Ethan, and before I knew it, he leaned in and pressed his lips against mine. The kiss was soft, hesitant at first, but it held so much more meaning than words could convey. For a brief moment, everything felt right. It was as if the world around us melted away, and there was only this connection.
But as soon as it began, he withdrew, his eyes wide with surprise. "I'm sorry, I didn't mean to," he said quickly, his voice filled with regret.
Before he could finish, something compelled me to reach out. I leaned in and kissed him again, this time with a newfound confidence. I needed him to understand that this moment was what I had been yearning for. It was a release, a connection that made the world fade away, if only for an instant.
His words settled around us, wrapping me in a sense of comfort. Maybe I wasn't at fault, but the hurt Jace left behind still felt raw. I needed to heal, to let go of the pain that haunted me.
We sat in silence for a moment, the weight of everything hanging in the air. I could feel the tension in Ethan, the unspoken feelings between us swirling like a storm. It was confusing, yet exhilarating, knowing that despite the chaos of my life, I had someone who cared deeply for me.
"Thank you, Ethan," I said quietly, my heart swelling with gratitude. "For being here, for listening."
"Always," he replied, his gaze unwavering. "I'll always be here for you."
