chapter 8 - silence

The next few days were the same. V couldn't move so N had to do all her chores, making him tired, though that would never stop him from visiting V to read.

It was really the only thing she could look forward to, being stuck in place doesn't get you very far and V... V was stuck.

Everyday he entered the library to hear V excitedly shouting his name. This obviously made him beyond happy, though one day that all changed

"V-valarie?" N stuttered, V being stood in the center of the library completely still. A giant X flashed on her visor, it being a bright yellow.

'Error 606' it read.

"VALARIE? VAL!!! VAL COMON' ANSWER ME!" N shouted worryingly, touching her hands and bringing them up to him.

"VALARIE!!" He cried. "T-TESSA!!! I NEED YOU!!!"

His words rang through the house as he looked desperately at V, pleading her to wake up.

"Nate? What's going on?" Tessa asked stumbling into the room out for breath.

"VAL- SHE- SHE WONT TALK AND SOMETHING WRONG... SHE WONT MOVE EITHER," N stuttered, trying to hold back tears.

"Here, let me see," She said calmly, N stepping out of the way for Tessa to look at V. N looked over Tessa, wanting to know what was wrong.

"error 606... I'm not sure Nate, I think it was an internal problem like we thought, " She spoke, "It must have spread causing her to shut down..."

Tear welded in Ns eyes though before they could release he wiped them away replacing it with a sniff.

"I- is she gonna be alright..?" He asked weakly, Tessa getting out of the way and N looking at V carefully.

"I'm not sure Nate, we might have to get rid of her... I don't know if her condition in contagious,"

N looked down at V, cupping her hands carefully.

"Val... if you can here me.." N started. "We'll save you and all will be well..."

N stepped back from her and just looked at her for a long while.

"Do you still want her here?" Tessa asked, N nodding immediately.

"Alright alright... I'll be eating, stay safe alright and call for me if you need anything."

As soon as Tessa left N broke into tears. He fell onto his knees feeling defeated. He tried stopping it but just couldn't. He couldn't bare to see V gone. What if she was thrown out or thrown away? N overthought. Maybe if he grieved enough she will come back? No.

All he could do was cry. He looked up at V, the X still casted onto her. He brought himself to his feet and looked at her carefully. Her glassed were missing...

He didn't think about it, all he thought about was how she was gone.

"valarie... if your still in there... do you want me to read a book?" He asked, pretending she would say yes.

He walked to grab the book and came back to her, sitting next to her with his legs criss-crossed. He read, tears welding in his eyes every few pages. It would be the only book he would read for a good long while.

Everyday was the same. V was standing there, alone collecting dust and cobwebs.

N didn't realize it but more drones had the same issue. Freezing with error 606 and a giant X.

"Nate, if i- you want Val to stay right..? You still want her here," Tessa questioned, N getting confused.

"Yes, she- I need her here. I promised her nothing bad would happen to her,"

"Uhm- Nate.."

Tessa sighed

"Nate.. we really can't keep her... I think we need to throw her out..." Tessa spoke to N, who's face became quick to change just by that sentence alone.

"NO! NO WE HAVE TO KEEP HER I WONT LET YOU!!" N screamed, not realizing his emotion change so suddenly. Even he was shocked by this "YOU CANT!"

Tessa's eyes widened.

"Nate... I- my mom... uh" Tessa spoke, her hand around her neck awkwardly.

"you're mom... what..?" N said, carefully.

"My parents.. there getting rid of all the drones that we- that are that error because-- they won't work," Tessa stated, her eyes full of guilty and sadness.

"wha... no. NO NO NO NO! YOU CANT! I WONT LET YOU TESSA YOU CANT TAKE HER AWAY!!" N cried, his eyes filled with tears as he fought against her. He held onto V with his life, scared someone would take her away to rot. He couldn't let that happen to her, ever. Guilt saturated his stomach, his head spinning.

"N YOU CANNOT SPEAK TO ME LIKE THAT!" Tessa shouted, using his serial number instead.

N was stunned, Tessa was too, not calling his that I'm years.

"N- I mean- Nate--" Tessa tried to reason with N though it only made him feel more heartbroken.

"n-n? Tessa wha- " N stuttered.

"Nate i'm- I'm so sorry I didn't mean-" Tessa beckoned, trying to reason with the drone, though his eyes were already teary.

"TESSA JAMES ELLIOT! WHAT IS ALL OF THE THIS RUCKUS!?" A voice yelled behind Tessa, making her flinch.

"M-mom! I'm just... taking this drone! I thought it would make it faster if I- helped!" Tessa stuttered.

N didn't know how to feel about this. He felt uneasy and scared.

Louisa looked at Tessa, then N.

"This one... what it's deal?" She asked, pointing N, who was standing in front of V.

"Oh, uhhh I'm not sure.." Tessa responded, looking down to avoid eye contact with N.

"Hmm, alright.. Tessa, you are to dispose of these two drones by next weekend. It is... Saturday today" She paused. "You mustn't argue however for the consequences, could lead to your expense,"

Tessa looked at her mom in fear, trembling slightly unsure of what to do.

"I'll leave you to it, surely it won't take you too long now?"

"Uh- n-no mother,"

"That's my girl," Louisa patted her on the head dryly before leaving the library.

N looked at Tessa, his white eyes hallow and empty, his artificial heart breaking by the second.

Tessa stared at N, guilt in her eyes as they began to tear up. She fell forward onto her knees, her arms crossed in front of her.

N ran to her as soon as he could.

"Miss Tessa? Tessa? Are you alright?"

"I'm so- so sorry Nate... please forgive me I promise nothing will happen," She cried silently.

N put his hand on her shoulder as she violently wiped her tears from her eyes.

"I'll let you have these last days, alright? if you can, get away from here. i want you two to live," Tessa stated.

N nodded, looking at V.

"I'm so sorry Nate.." Tessa whispered, N shushing her and patting her shoulder.

She leaned onto N, her face wet with tears.

"its okay Tess... its alright,"
