Priyal stood at the helm of the Hemis Pack, a position that weighed heavy on her young shoulders. At just 20 years old, she had already been both Alpha and Luna for two years, a role she stepped into on her 18th birthday. The Hemis Pack lived secluded in the high-altitude regions of Ladakh, blending seamlessly with the local human tribes. Most werewolves believed her pack was wiped out years ago or mistook them for a simple human tribe that practiced Buddhism. It was a carefully crafted illusion—one that kept the surviving members of her pack safe. Her parents, the former Alpha and Luna, were killed in a ruthless midnight raid by the Xian Pack twelve years ago, leaving their young daughter to inherit the role of Alpha in a pack that traditionally demanded a male leader. But there was no son to take the title. The few remaining elders, including Aunt Tara—Priyal’s father’s twin sister—stepped in to raise her and the other orphaned wolves. Daksh, Tara’s son and Priyal’s Beta, was more like a brother to her, always protective and loyal, though he respected her leadership entirely. Daksh’s mate, Riva, was still young at 16, and until she matured, Priyal was bound to her Alpha role, even if it was temporary.
To the outside world, the Hemis Pack had been exterminated in the bloodshed of that Xian attack, but a few elders and children had survived, hidden among the Buddhist monasteries in Ladakh. The monks, committed to their nonviolent beliefs, sheltered the pack and protected their secret. While the younger monks knew little of their true nature, the elders understood the pack’s existence and offered covert support. The monastery’s teachings, rooted in harmony with all living creatures, had made it a perfect refuge for the remaining wolves.
Priyal’s pack now masked their scents using special blends from endemic lichens in their forests, an ancient practice passed down through generations. They lived in close association with the monasteries, hidden from the werewolf world. Only the Rinnay Pack of Kashmir knew of their survival, but even there, only the elders were privy to their true origins. For now, secrecy was their greatest ally.
Despite their isolation, the younger wolves needed more than the spiritual guidance of the monasteries. Priyal, always drawn to the healing arts, had chosen to pursue a medical degree. Dun Medical College in Nainital was her destination. Vyom, her other Beta, would join her, while Daksh would study engineering at Dun College, and their Gamma, Ranveer, would attend the nearby arts college. The elders had arranged a villa on the outskirts of the city, in collaboration with the monastery. Remote and quiet, it was the perfect place for wolves to reside, away from prying human eyes.
As they prepared to leave for Nainital, Priyal knew her responsibilities wouldn’t ease. Even in a new city, her leadership would be tested, and their survival would depend on maintaining their secrets. But she was ready, as she always had been.
