Chapter Fourteen
────────────────────

The flight back to base proceeded in oppressive silence. Catarina sat with her arms crossed, staring out the window as the clouds passed by in the distance. Her team had successfully evacuated the hostages and freed the station from the pirates, but the triumph she usually felt after a successful mission refused to come. The weight of the unspoken conflict weighed heavily on her.

Steve sat across from her, but he avoided even glancing in her direction. His face was tense, and when their eyes did meet, all she saw was obvious anger. The tense atmosphere in the jet was palpable, and none of their teammates dared to break the silence—not even Natascha.

When the jet finally landed and the door opened, Steve was the first to unbuckle and get out of his seat. Without a word, without a glance, he marched down the ramp and stormed toward the hangar doors. Catarina watched him go, feeling a knot form in her stomach, but she knew this wasn’t the moment to speak to him.

"What’s up with him?" Natascha asked as she walked down the ramp beside Catarina. She brushed a loose strand of hair from her face and looked over at her with a questioning glance.

Catarina let out a heavy sigh. "I think I messed up," she muttered, trying to push away the nagging thoughts. Natascha placed a comforting hand on her shoulder.

"Cap can’t stay mad at you forever," she said with a gentle smile. "You know him. He just needs some time to cool off."

"Yeah, I know," Catarina replied, but there was a hint of doubt in her voice.

She forced a weak smile and looked at Natascha. "I was going to check in with Perrie and Clint real quick. You coming?"

"Sorry," Natascha responded, "I need to catch Jade before her next training session." She raised her hands apologetically and was already heading in the opposite direction.

"Alright, see you later," Catarina called after her, before heading toward one of the training halls where Perrie and Clint often worked on their hand-to-hand combat skills. She tried to shake off the unease within her and focus on the upcoming meeting.

As she entered the training hall, she could already hear the dull sound of punches and the clashing of weapons. On the mat, she saw Perrie and Clint in the middle of an intense hand-to-hand combat session. Clint threw a well-aimed punch, which Perrie skillfully blocked.

"Hey, kid. Hey, old man," Catarina called out loudly to get their attention.

Clint looked up and waved cheerfully at her. "Hey, Kitty," he shouted back, lowering his combat staff.
"Hey, Cat," Perrie greeted her with a smile as she brushed a strand of hair from her face. "What are you doing here? I thought you were still on the mission?"
