──────────────────── Chapter Nine ────────────────────
The group had been fighting relentlessly against the Chintauri for hours, finding not a single moment of rest. These creatures seemed like an endless plague; as soon as one was taken down, two more appeared seemingly out of nowhere. Their numbers appeared inexhaustible, and the constant reappearance of the enemies drained the Avengers' strength and morale.
Natasha, whose body was already marked by exhaustion, had just fought off the last wave of attacks with precise shots. Sweat was running down her forehead, and she was breathing heavily. Still, she tried to keep her courage up as she looked at the others and said, "This is pointless as long as we can’t close the portal." The desperation in her voice was unmistakable, for she knew that despite all their efforts, they were just treading water.
Catarina, her gaze fixed intently on a point on the horizon, immediately grasped the significance of Natasha’s words. She could see the tower in the distance, rising ominously and yet as the only glimmer of hope above the city rooftops. Despite the distance, the tower was clearly visible due to its enormous height, a monument to their last chance. "One of us needs to get up there," Catarina said with a determined voice, keeping her eyes on the tower.
Above their heads, more Chintauri hovered like vultures, waiting to strike. The red-haired agent, briefly diverting her gaze from the enemies, nodded resolutely. With a crooked grin that momentarily broke the tense situation, she said, "I need a lift."
Catarina couldn’t help but shake her head in frustration. She had long understood what Natasha had in mind and couldn’t suppress a mocking comment: "I hate it when you come up with ideas like this." But in reality, she knew that such risky maneuvers often made the difference between life and death.
Rogers, who had joined the two women, listened to the exchange with an incredulous expression. "Are you sure you can handle this?" he asked, worry evident in his voice.
Natasha responded only with a challenging smile, "Sure, this will be fun." She took a few steps back to get a running start. It was as if the danger fueled her adrenaline and gave her the energy she needed for the upcoming maneuver. "I’ll need a boost," she added, looking at Rogers, who was already positioning his shield.
Before Natasha sprinted off, Catarina turned to her, her gaze piercing. "Good luck. Put an end to all this crap," she said, her voice filled with a mix of concern and hope.
With a determined smile on her lips, Natasha set her plan into motion. She ran, leaped skillfully onto a nearby parked car, pushed off, and landed on Rogers' shield. With a precise movement, the Captain hurled her into the air, where she deftly grabbed one of the Chintauri's flying devices. Like a shadow, she was carried by the flying creatures toward her target, the tower.
But Catarina had little time to watch Natasha, as another, even larger wave of Chintauri rolled toward them. "Cat, watch out!" Steve shouted, his tone urgent and warning. Catarina followed his gaze and saw the enemy horde charging at them with uncontrollable fury.
