Chapter One
────────────────────Catarina had freed herself from the long shadows of her father and brother since joining the mysterious organization SHIELD.
She was no longer just a side character in their life stories; she had become a central figure, a shadow that skillfully hid in the background and appeared like a phantom when needed. Her ability to move unnoticed and play an inconspicuous yet crucial role made her a valuable member of the organization. Despite her quiet demeanor, she had risen to become one of the best agents under Nick Fury's leadership, equipped with high security clearance and the trust granted to only a few.
The responsibility of guarding the Tesseract was both an honor and a burden. This task was entrusted to Catarina, side by side with Clint Barton, who was not only her former mentor but also her closest confidant and friend. In the quiet hours of the night, as the world around her seemed to sleep, Catarina patrolled the sterile corridors of the specially built research station. This station was solely dedicated to monitoring the Tesseract and unraveling its secrets. With two steaming cups of coffee in hand—one for herself and one for Clint—she prepared for another long night of vigilance.
The hall they were in was a hive of activity, filled with scientists dedicated to their work. "Are you sure we have to stay up here all night?" Catarina asked as she looked at Clint, who was casually sitting on the edge of the platform, his legs dangling in the empty space. He leaned back, his forearms resting on the railing, his chin resting on his hands. "From up here, you have the perfect overview," he replied, turning his head slightly in her direction. "You can keep an eye on everything—the people down there and the cube." With a nod, he indicated the scientists eagerly working on the Tesseract.
Catarina sighed softly and handed him his coffee. Despite her long affiliation with SHIELD and her experience, she still couldn't fully understand why Fury had chosen her for this surveillance task. She sat down next to Clint and let her own legs swing over the edge of the platform. "As if anything ever happens here. Day after day, we sit here and stare at that damn cube," she murmured, bored, taking a sip of her coffee. Clint chuckled softly. "Always expect the unexpected," he replied with a grin. "Oh great, now you're giving me the old wisdom," Catarina mocked, a smile on her lips. "Very funny, Kitty," Clint retorted sarcastically and turned his gaze back down to continue his watch. As the older of the two, he had always preferred to keep everything in view to assess the situation correctly.
Cat leaned back, her eyes fixed on the bare concrete ceiling of the bunker. With a gesture of theatrical despair, she stretched out her arms and fell into her chair. "But seriously," she sighed, "I want to experience something again. We've been in this underground hole for weeks. There are agents all around who could just as well be watching this blue cube."
