Chapter Five
────────────────────After Catarina had calmed down, her eyes scanned the surroundings, and she noticed that Steve Rogers was also leaving the lab. A fleeting thought crossed her mind: What was he up to? Although she had no clear idea, her instincts—honed through years of training—were alert enough to make her follow him. She gave him a slight head start but followed him so inconspicuously that she seemed like a shadow.
The path led her through the long, sterile corridors of the Carrier. The neon-lit hallways, cold and lifeless, intensified the tension in the air. Catarina moved silently, each step precise and deliberate. She knew Rogers was an excellent soldier with sharp and attentive senses. But she was an agent—one of SHIELD's best—and was adept at moving undetected.
Up to the storage level, Catarina believed Rogers hadn’t noticed her. She felt secure, confident that her training hadn't failed her. The storage level was almost empty; only the faint hum of ventilation and the distant rumble of machinery reached her ears. But then she saw Steve disappear around the next corner without warning. Immediately, she quickened her pace, now slightly less inconspicuous but still cautious. She turned the corner as well—only to be suddenly grabbed from nowhere and forcefully pressed against the cold metal wall.
It all happened so fast that Catarina barely had time to react. Rogers was faster than she had anticipated and now stood close to her. His hands gripped her wrists tightly, pinning them painfully against the wall. His face was close, his eyes penetrating and filled with determination. "Why are you following me Stark?" he asked with a harshness in his voice that almost made her shudder. It wasn’t a gentle tone but one that tolerated no excuses.
Catarina forced herself to remain calm. She could feel her heart racing, but her training had taught her to maintain her composure in such moments. "I thought we were on a first-name basis?" she replied, her voice intentionally monotonous, accompanied by a slightly contrived, seductive smile. Yet she knew he wouldn’t be impressed by that.
"Answer the question, Cat!" he demanded, his voice becoming more insistent. She could see he had no patience for games. "Fury told me to keep an eye on you all, and if anyone does something suspicious, to stop them," Catarina lied smoothly. The lie rolled off her tongue as if she had prepared it long ago. In reality, her task was quite different: she was supposed to monitor her brother, but she knew Rogers was dangerously close to discovering the secret of Phase 2.
Steve seemed to weigh her answer, but his eyes betrayed that he was not fully convinced. "So you’re just blindly following your boss’s orders," he noted coolly. There was a hint of resignation in his voice, as if he had expected something like this. "He’s my boss," Catarina retorted tersely, meeting his gaze intensely. "And now let me go!"
