The soft, melancholy notes of "Someone Like You" by Adele filled the studio as Karianah's fingers moved gracefully over the piano keys. She let the music carry her thoughts, each note resonating with the lingering emotions from her conversation with Jordan. It had only been a few days, but the words "we need space" echoed in her mind, no matter how much she tried to push them away.
In the nearby rooms, Mariah, Ariel, and Summer were in their own zones, working on their respective tracks, but Karianah felt the weight of her solitude. Music had always been her refuge, and today was no different. She poured her heart into the melody, hoping it would drown out the hurt.
Suddenly, the door to her recording booth swung open without a knock. Karianah's fingers faltered on the keys, the abrupt intrusion pulling her out of her moment. She glanced up to see Sophia standing there, her expression as chipper as ever, which only made Karianah's irritation grow.
"Lucian needs everyone in the conference room for a meeting," Sophia said, her voice overly sweet, as if she hadn't been a looming presence in Karianah's life recently.
Karianah bit back the sharp words that threatened to escape. She wanted to snap, to ask why Sophia always seemed to show up at the worst times, but she reminded herself to stay professional. Taking a deep breath, she stood up, smoothing her clothes and putting on a calm facade.
"Thanks," she said simply, her tone measured as she stepped out of the booth.
As she made her way toward the conference room, her mind raced. Karianah couldn't shake the feeling that Sophia was more than just a friend, and the nagging doubts only fueled her frustration. But she couldn't let it show—not here, not now.
Entering the hallway, she saw Mariah, Ariel, and Summer emerging from their respective booths, exchanging glances with her. They must've noticed Sophia's presence too, and from their looks, they were just as annoyed. None of them said a word as they made their way to the conference room, but the tension was palpable.
The door opened, and Lucian strode in without hesitation. His presence immediately silenced the room. He sat down at the head of the table, leaning back in his chair and eyeing everyone with a look of exasperation.
"Hello, everyone. Glad you're all here... I guess," Lucian began, his voice flat. He didn't waste time getting to the point. "I've been noticing that you all have been getting a lot of attention lately from the media."
Karianah felt his eyes land directly on her. "Some more than others..." Lucian added pointedly.
Karianah stomach dropped as Lucian pulled up a video on the screen behind him. It was the clip of her from brunch—throwing her plate of eggs at the paparazzi. The room went silent, save for the soft chuckle that escaped Serayah, who sat across the table. She gave Karianah a smug, petty smile, clearly relishing the moment.
