Odysseus was just a man. A man cradling an infant as old as Telemachus was when he left for war. Astyanax, the son of none other than Troy's very own Prince Hector, (he had heard the name from Zeus, who was telling him to kill the child) smiled and beamed at the man. The infant looked so much like Polites, sweet, beautiful Polites, when he smiled. Odysseus set the child back down onto his cot. His brown hair curled and framed his wide, innocent eyes as he stared at Odysseus. Raising his dagger, he prepared to kill Astyanax. The dagger dropped. He couldn't bring himself to do it.
Faintly, over his pounding heart, he could hear Zeus telling him to kill the child. One life to save so many more. In his mind, he saw Penelope and Telemachus suffering because he couldn't kill Astyanax. In the infant, Odysseus saw Polites, the same complexion, eyes, and even the smiling look on their faces. He picked up the infant by the cloth wrapped around him. Heavy, painful steps as he walked towards the balcony that overlooked Troy. Would he become a monster for this? The infant dropped.
He was just a man.
