The next day at school in the hallway, Marnie spoke to Aggie, "If you don't start talking to me, we're definitely gonna lose our magic."
Maisie wondered why Marnie chose now, in the hallway in school, surrounded by a lot of people, to try and get Aggie to talk, since someone could overhear them.
"Fine," Aggie replied. "But what am I supposed to do?" She seemed to look around, "Everyone suddenly looks suspicious to me." She seemed to spot someone and Maisie knew who it was without having to look. "Oh, well, not everyone." She waved at Principal Flannegan, "Good morning.
Principal Flannegan waved back, "Aggie."
Maisie scowled a little, because no 'good morning' to her and Marnie? What were they? Next door neighbors?
Marnie spoke to Aggie, "You are nothing but a little flirt, you know that?"
Aggie kept smiling, "I know."
Marnie and Maisie walked away. Maisie didn't really see anything wrong with Aggie flirting with someone, it was just weird that it had to be with the principal.
"You shouldn't have bet on it," Maisie told Marnie.
Marnie hissed at Maisie, "Will you shut up?" She sighed as she opened her locker, "I'm sorry. I'm beating myself up over it. I don't know why I said it."
Maisie shrugged it off, because she can feel the guilt coming from Marnie. "We should really think about letting humans know about the Halloweentown stuff, because how else are we supposed to get humans to accept the creatures? I don't think the Haunted House of Tolerance is going to work, because people want spooky not 'Here's How to Tolerate Monsters, 101.'"
Marnie got whatever she needed from her locker and then they were on their way. Maisie didn't even use her locker because she saw no point in it.
Maisie spotted Natalie and Dylan. Natalie had been walking away and Dylan called after her, "Wait. You think I'm funny looking?"
"Ooh, talk about being the last to know," Marnie said to Dylan and patted his shoulder, "It's okay."
"Marnie!" called Cassie, "Maisie! Come quick!" She ran over to get the twins. She took Marnie's arm. "Come quick." Maisie followed after Marnie and Cassie, definitely attracting some strange looks as the bell rang.
"Girls! Stop! No running in the hallways!" a teacher scolded them.
Cassie led them to the clubhouse locker – which was damaged.
"Someone really wanted to get inside," Cassie said as Marnie looked at the locker door.
Maisie wondered how no one seemed to notice the damaged locker. Or why Principal Flannegan didn't call the police because of the obvious vandalism.
"What?" whispered Marnie in shock.
"How did they damage it so badly?" asked Maisie. "More importantly, do you think they got inside?"
The three of them used their magic to get inside the clubhouse to look around to see if anything was damaged.
"Doesn't look like anybody was in here except for us," Cassie pointed out.
Marnie started, "I don't get it."
"I don't either," Maisie said. Everything seemed fine.
"It's good that nobody got in here, right?" asked Cassie, grabbing Maisie's shoulder.
"This locker was specifically targeted," Maisie pointed out. "Someone knows we hang out here." She looked at the suit of armor and felt a slight chill down her spine. Hearing so much about the Knights of the Iron Dagger was really getting to her.
"Yeah," Marnie agreed. "If we were dealing with somebody from Halloweentown, they wouldn't have had to smash their way in." She gestured to the boxes. "So maybe we really are dealing with somebody from this world."
Besides the council and the parents, who knows that the Boo Crew were there? Well, besides the obvious? Would anyone on the Counsel really want to scare them that badly into sending the Boo Crew back home because they think that Halloweentown monsters and humans wouldn't get along?
Sure, some of the Counsel were too excited at the idea of the Cromwells losing their magic, but doing all this just to get them to call off the program?
Surely, watching them fail is a lot more satisfying than scaring them into giving up, right?
"We have to talk to Grandma," Marnie said to Cassie.
They turned to leave, but Cassie grabbed Marnie's arm. "Well, wait. W-w-what do you want me to do?"
"Uh, just stay here," Marnie told her. "You'll be safe."
Marnie and Maisie both left the clubhouse together, with Maisie feeling a bit bothered and unsettled.
