Lucas POV
I walked out behind Brynn, heading to class. The late bell sounded through the hallway as I jogged to my classroom. I walked in, ready for the detention slip I knew was coming.
"Lucked out!" my best friend Kyle shouted across the room.
I gave him a questioning look before realizing that the teacher wasn't there yet. Smiling and shaking my head I sat down next to him, just as Mr. Denne strode in.
"Close one," I whispered, nodding my head towards Kyle.
"Um... Excuse me. Lucas was not on time today," a familiar voice rang out.
"What was that Miss Hales?" he snapped in his own cruel tone.
"Lucas was late!" she replied, smirking at me over her shoulder.
"Is that true?" he glared at me over the tops of his glasses, carefully perched on his crooked nose.
"No, of course not!" Jack said, defending me, "He was here the whole time!"
"Well there ya go," I smiled, shrugging my shoulders.
"They're lying! They're all lying!!" Vanessa protested throwing her hands up in the air, exasperated.
Mr. Denne ignored her, writing on the chalkboard. It read, get to work and no talking. Wow Mr. Denne, getting creative! I thought sarcastically, rolling my eyes. Reaching in to my backpack, I pulled out a notebook and a pencil. I had first period English and decided doodling was kinda like writing, right?
I raised my head, glancing through the small window set in the wood of the door, smiling as Brynn's face appeared.
The handle twisted and she stepped through, rubbing her hands anxiously. "Um... Excuse me?"
Mr. Denne's eyes snapped up, eyebrow raising.
"I'm looking for the... Um... The English classroom. I'm new here and didn't have time to look around this..." she was cut off by Denne as he told her this was the class.
"Take your seat and follow the instructions on the board," he muttered, looking back down to his book.
She hurried off to the last open seat, in the row next to me, but one seat ahead. Brynn tucked her hair behind her ear and started to get lost in a book. A small smile appeared on my face and it did not go by unnoticed by Kyle.
"Aye, I see that smile!" he whispered just loud enough for my sensitive ears to catch it.
"Shut up!" I shot back, kicking his foot.
I looked up to see Bryan scribbling words down on a piece of paper a few seats away. We weren't exactly friends. We hadn't been for a while now... Bryan tossed the paper on to Libby's desk and whispered something to her. She nodded and slipped it onto Brynn's desk, tapping it with her fingers and gesturing towards Bryan, letting her know who it was from.
