there were few situations were zaria had felt more awkward than when sitting in silence in the same room as gabby, both of them scrolling on their phones and hoping the other would say something, but that didn't happen.

the silence slowly drove the laney girl insane. she knew she had to get out. gabby didn't question anything when zaria got up and left the room, only looked up for a second before going back to her phone.

very few people actually hung out the first night, being tired after the bus ride and the hours of school they had before that. zaria had no idea where she was going, knowing the curfew that had been set was in 20 minutes.

down the hall she saw a familiar athlete carrying a bag over her shoulder. her brows furrowed slightly at the sight of the girl. "shouldn't you be in you room?" lynn questioned, stopping in her tracks. "shouldn't you?" zaria copied her move, stopping as well.

they room went silent and lynn's gaze switched between zaria's eyes.

"are you ok?" her voice was filled with concern as she watched zaria rock her foot back and forth. "yeah, i just needed some fresh air"  lynn bit her cheek for a second. "are you down to go out" she heard how it sounded, but didn't really care in what way the other girl picked it up, knowing she could play it off. "curfew is in like 30 minutes. they're going to murder us if we're out anything past that" the other girl told, a small smile on her lips.

"come on, they're probably going to forget about us anyway" lynn said with hopeful eyes, dragging out the letters. zaria couldn't help but laugh at it. "you're that desperate to spend time with me, huh?" she shrugged her shoulders. "what can i say"

the athlete dropped her bag and grabbed zaria's hand. she checked her surroundings for any of the teachers, starting to walk when she didn't see any.

none of them had let go of the other when they got outside.

"where do you want to go?" she questioned, watching as zaria bit her cheek. "can we just walk?"

"of course"

when the sun started to set 15 minutes later, they had already forgotten about the curfew. their hands were still interlocked, swinging slowly back and forth as they walked.

they turned around corner and saw something that looked like a fair. they shared a look saying the same before heading towards the entrance.

it felt easy being around lynn. zaria felt like she could be herself and not one of the versions she felt like she had to be around nick or any of her other friends not to disappoint them. lynn didn't need to plan things weeks ahead to be able to do them. it made zaria feel like she was free, like she was living after holding herself back. for so long she had isolated herself away from others, avoiding plans and making up excuses not to go, but when lynn requested hanging out, she seemed to forget the part about overthinking it all.
