Seeing my silence, Renee asked again, "Is giving you a guitar a problem? And you don't have to lose!"
As soon as I heard the words 'and', an ominous feeling welled up in me. After spending a long time together, I have discovered that whenever she uses words like this, she is often already digging a pit for me, and then luring me willingly to jump in.
But then I thought, I was the one who suggested the bet, so she had no reason to dig a pit, so this worry was completely unnecessary.
"Giving you a guitar is a trivial thing, but... I can't afford it!"
Although my words took a sharp turn, they were indeed the truth. If I just gave her a guitar that cost a hundred yuan, it would be completely out of keeping with her superb playing skills.
Renee was speechless for a long time before she said to me, "You can owe it first."
I smiled and immediately agreed, adding, "Like you said yourself, I may not necessarily lose. Everything is just a matter of if."
"Well, then I wish you every success and hope that this if never becomes a reality."
"No problem, we'll see the results tonight!"
...
After dinner at CC's restaurant, I went to the bank to transfer the money and repay the 500,000 yuan each to Brittany and Renee. I felt a great sense of relief, as if a snail had shed its heavy shell. Without any worries, I could finally set to work on running the bar.
CC and I spent the afternoon in the bar getting ready for the opening. To our surprise, some customers started arriving at around 5pm. According to them, they came early because they had watched our performance at Jumei the previous day and wanted to get a feel for the charm of "The Fifth Season" in advance.
I felt mixed emotions. On the one hand, I was happy that the positioning of the bar had initially attracted the attention of consumers. On the other hand, I was worried that, if this trend continued, Renee and I would inevitably lose our bet.
But this worry was fleeting, because in my subconscious mind, I still really wanted to give Renee a guitar. After all, a guitar will accompany her for a long time, even a lifetime, just like the guitar Brittany gave me.
The first customers to enter the bar, whether they brought the coupons distributed or not, were given a free bottle of beer, so the customers drank their beers and commented on the re-opened bar.
I mingled with the customers, listened to their comments, and also sought some of their opinions, which I then took to heart and will make improvements when the conditions are ripe. However, overall the customers still gave very high ratings and were full of expectations for this kind of bar that focuses on ideology.
Winter nights always come quickly, and I was unaware that the sky had completely darkened, as I kept guarding the door of the bar and welcoming the arrival of guests.
It was almost 6:30 when I finally saw the red Q7 in the distance, and then I saw Renee, dressed casually, sitting in the car.
After Renee parked the car, she came up to me. I looked her over and said with a smile, "That red down jacket of yours looks good."
"I dressed this way on purpose, hoping that the bar will be a roaring success,"
I was touched, but I still blurted out, "If the bar is booming, I'll make money, and if I have money, I can buy you a guitar... You really think about everything!"
"Yes, yes... I'm waiting for you to make money and buy it for me." After that, she looked around and happened to see another van arrive, from which a group of customers came out to spend money at the bar. Renee smiled and said, "Looks like you're going to lose today!"
"It's fine if I lose, I'll be happy. The more people who come, the better. At least it proves that consumers approve of this bar!"
Renee seemed very happy too, patting my shoulder and saying, "Work hard, don't let me down!"
I didn't say anything, but the word 'expectations' was enough to make me daydream. I really hoped that she wasn't just saying that to me, but that she really did have high expectations.
Renee didn't go into the bar right away. She stood with me outside the door, welcoming the guests who kept arriving, chatting with me a little about this and that.
I asked her again, "Why are you here alone today? Where is your little turtle friend?"
"He is back in the country for the first time in a while and has other friends to meet... But can you stop calling him a little turtle?"
"He is a turtle, after all. Besides, he probably calls me worse behind my back!"
Renee suddenly laughed...
I immediately asked with a stern face, "Tell me honestly, what does he call me behind my back?"
Renee kept shaking her head and said, 'I can't tell you that!"
"I'll strangle you if you don't tell me..."
"Why are you strangling me? It's not like I call you that!"
I was curious and upset at the same time, and said to Renee, 'Call little turtle over now, I want to talk to him face to face!"
"I'm not calling him, and I think it's quite appropriate for him to call you that!"
"Is that how you show favoritism? You're not happy when I call him Little Turtle, but you enjoy it when he calls me behind my back!"
Renee replied with a look of justification, "It depends on the person. You should see how you usually treat me!"
I took advantage of the situation and said, "Yes, I can't do something as pretentious as booking the entire movie theater to confess my love to you!"
"Don't you dare mention that!"
"What's done is done. I said it, so what?" I said, looking at Renee defiantly.
"Vermin!"
I had never heard Renee use such a fresh word to curse at me, and I immediately responded, angrily, "Damn, you look so good cursing like that, you must have learned it from the little turtle, right?"
"You are a vermin!"
I immediately embraced Renee, who was not prepared, and threw her into my arms. I didn't completely throw her down, but let her lie on my knees, and said, "Try to curse again, I'll believe it and really throw you on the ground, so you know what it means to be on all fours!"
Renee's face suddenly turned pale, but it wasn't from panic, or fear of my intimidation. She said to me with a solemn face, "Lucas, don't play jokes like this with me, I don't like it at all!"
Her cold tone left me at a loss for words. I subconsciously tried to help her up from my lap, but I didn't realize that Mark and Harlan, who had come to support me, had just happened to get out of the car and saw the scene.
It seems that every time we have excessive physical contact, we will be inexplicably bumped by acquaintances. Last time it was my father, and this time it was Harlan and Mark.
Renee was lying on my lap, so she was restricted in her vision and did not notice Mark and Harlan walking towards us. They, in turn, did not notice Renee at all, and in their line of sight, they could not see Renee's face at all.
Harlan, who had come up to me, joked with me, saying, "Lucas, who's the girl you're flirting with?"
I was at a loss for words, and finally helped Renee, who had been on my lap, to stand up...
Harlan and Mark were startled, really startled. They looked at each other and, after a while, exclaimed, "Miss Executive Officer..."
