I turned to Renee and said with a hint of smugness, "You've seen what I can do, haven't you? I advise you to quickly give up the idea of hailing a taxi and take a ride with me instead. I can get rid of one just like that."

Renee ignored me and turned away, stubbornly walking in the rain and wind.

I sighed, but followed her footsteps anyway, determined to keep up with her wherever she went.

We walked to the end of the street like this, and Renee suddenly stopped. I followed her and couldn't overcome my inertia in time, so I ran straight into her. We both stumbled, but thankfully we didn't fall.

I looked at her a little awkwardly. She seemed to have had enough of the torture and asked, "How long are you going to keep following me?"

"I'll follow you for as long as you walk."

"Don't you think you're annoying?"

I shook my head: "No, I don't. I just think there must be some misunderstanding between us!"

Renee ignored my claim of misunderstanding and asked, 'Do you know the temperature right now?"

"Five degrees below zero."

"You do know it's five degrees below zero! Please stop pestering me. I'm really cold and just want to go back to bed."

I casually said, 'Then I'll go over to your place."

"How can you even ask? You took over my old house, and now you want to take over my other house too?"

Me: "..."

"Go be with your friend who's got her period. I think she needs you more... I'm leaving, so stop pestering me."

I still instinctively wanted to follow her, and she turned around and said to me again, "Lucas, it's minus five degrees!"

Hearing her say "minus five degrees" made it seem as if my limbs had been frozen. I just stood there, unable to move, and watched her walk to the street corner, where she finally got into a taxi and left.

I let out a heavy sigh, took a cigarette out of my pack, but my hands were so cold in the minus five degrees that I couldn't hold onto the cigarette, and it slipped from my hands.

Another sigh, and I turned around and walked back the way I had come.

...

I returned to the old house, but I didn't want to see a note on the coffee table left by Violetta: "Lucas, I've caused you trouble again. I'm really sorry. I've gone to a hotel!"

I couldn't help crying. Doesn't this moment prove that we are born to be lonely? In the end, in this night of minus five degrees, I was the only one left in this house.

I sat alone on the sofa for a long time, and then took my phone out of my pocket and sent Violetta a message, reminding her not to catch a cold while she slept. After all, she was still menstruating and her body was much weaker than an average woman's.

Violetta quickly replied, "Yeah, I won't catch a cold... By the way, where's Renee? Did you get her?"

"Do you know the temperature tonight?"

"Five degrees below zero."

"Yes, so I can't pester her on a night like this, can I?"

Violetta sent a sad face emoticon: "I'm sorry, I didn't know she was suddenly back."

"Don't say sorry, after all, we don't have anything now...and neither does she."

"But you can't deny that you like her, right? And according to CC, she went to the US and suddenly rushed back, just to surprise you, right?"
