Kevin lay back on the exam table, his shirt pulled up over his round belly, the cold gel already smeared across his skin. Nico sat beside him, holding his hand, their fingers laced together in silent anticipation. This was their final ultrasound, the last time they would see their baby before the birth.
The doctor entered the room, offering a warm smile. "Ready to take a look?"
Kevin nodded, though he felt a tight knot of anxiety in his chest. The baby had been moving less the past couple of days, and even though everyone said it was normal at this stage, he couldn't help but worry.
The room filled with the soft hum of the ultrasound machine, and then, there it was-the grainy black-and-white image of their baby on the screen. Kevin's heart skipped a beat as the doctor moved the wand across his belly, adjusting the angle.
"There's your baby," the doctor said, pointing to the screen.
Kevin squeezed Nico's hand, and Nico leaned forward slightly, his eyes fixed on the image. "Everything looks good?" Nico asked, his voice steady but laced with concern.
The doctor nodded. "Everything looks perfect. Strong heartbeat, healthy development. You're both doing great."
Kevin let out a breath he hadn't realized he was holding, relief washing over him. He turned his head to look at Nico, who was smiling, though there was a slight sheen of tears in his eyes. It always hit Nico hard, these moments when they saw their baby, reminding him of how real it all was.
"I can't believe it," Kevin whispered, his voice catching in his throat. "That's our baby."
Nico leaned down and kissed Kevin's forehead gently. "I know. It's amazing."
The doctor pointed out a few more details on the screen-tiny feet, a hand waving slightly, the curve of the baby's spine. Kevin watched in awe, his heart swelling with a mix of love and nervousness.
"Have you thought about where you'll deliver?" the doctor asked casually.
Kevin nodded, though his eyes never left the screen. "We've talked about it. I want Nico to be there, no matter what. I need him there."
The doctor smiled warmly. "Of course. We'll make sure everything is ready for when the time comes. It's getting close."
When the ultrasound was done, and Kevin's belly was cleaned off, they sat together in the small office, going over the last-minute details with the doctor. There were discussions about travel restrictions, with Kevin learning that he wouldn't be able to fly soon. The news hit him hard, and he found himself fighting back tears.
"I don't want to miss anything," Kevin said, his voice trembling. "I hate that I won't be able to go to the races anymore."
Nico immediately put his arm around him, pulling him close. "It's okay. We'll figure it out. I'll make sure I'm always close by. You won't be alone."
Kevin wiped at his eyes, feeling silly for getting so emotional, but the reality of everything was weighing on him. "What if something happens and you're not there?"
Nico gently cupped Kevin's face, his thumb brushing away a tear. "I will be there. Always. We're in this together, Kev. I promise."
Kevin nodded, leaning into Nico's touch, feeling reassured by his presence. They left the doctor's office hand in hand, ready for whatever the next few weeks would bring.
It was becoming real now. The baby would be here soon, and despite the nerves, Kevin felt a strange sense of calm. With Nico by his side, he knew they could handle anything.
Kevin was pacing around the living room, one hand on his swollen belly, the other holding his phone tightly. He'd been feeling uneasy all morning, the pressure in his abdomen building to something he couldn't quite ignore anymore. He had been trying to wait it out, hoping it was just false labor, but now, it was clear. This was happening.
