The soft hum of the jet engines was barely a memory as Kevin and Nico stood in the quiet of their apartment. It had been a long few days, but finally, they were home. Boxes of baby clothes, gifts, and supplies cluttered the living room, remnants of the overwhelming support from their friends and teammates.
Kevin sank into the couch, his hand instinctively resting on his belly, now nearly five months along. His body had started to change, making the pregnancy more real by the day. But as much as he was excited about their future, the fear from Nico's crash still weighed heavily on him.
Nico walked into the room, looking pale but determined, his movements still careful from the crash. He had a concussion and two broken ribs, and though the doctors had cleared him to come home, the physical and emotional toll was obvious.
"Kev," Nico said softly, sitting next to him. "I keep thinking about the crash... about you, about the baby."
Kevin looked at him, his heart heavy. He knew what Nico was feeling because he felt it too. He had already given up racing months ago for the sake of their child, but seeing Nico crash, the near miss that could have ended much worse, made him question everything.
"I know," Kevin admitted, his voice quiet. "I've been thinking about it too."
Nico reached over, placing a hand over Kevin's belly. It was a gesture he did more often now, grounding himself in the reality of the baby growing inside. "You've already made the decision to stop racing, and I understand that. But I'm still out there, Kev. Every time I get in that car, you worry, and I... I worry too."
Kevin's hand covered Nico's. "I don't want you to give up racing, Nico. I know how much it means to you. But I won't lie, every time you're out there, it terrifies me."
Nico sighed, leaning into Kevin. "I can't help but think... maybe it's time I slow down too. Not stop, but... I can't risk it like I used to."
Kevin tensed at the idea. The thought of the German stepping away from something they had both built their lives around felt heavy. But at the same time, he knew that their priorities were shifting.
"I want us to be safe, Nico. I want us to be here for the baby," Kevin said, his voice soft but filled with emotion.
Nico nodded, his hand gently rubbing Kevin's belly. "We will be. I'll figure something out, okay? For us."
They sat there for a while, the weight of their decisions heavy but their love strong enough to carry it. They had time to figure it out, and for now, being together was enough.
