Rune ran through the woods, the dense trees swallowing him whole as he fled from the celebration that was meant to bring him joy but instead filled him with despair. His legs burned with exhaustion, but he couldn’t stop. He didn’t want to face the reality that had hit him so hard. His mate, the one he had waited for all his life, wasn’t who he wanted. He felt trapped, suffocated by fate’s cruel joke. All he wanted was Aaron his grumpy .
When Rune finally couldn’t run any longer, his legs gave out, and he collapsed onto the forest floor, his heart screaming with pain. His voice followed soon after, a loud, guttural cry that echoed through the trees. He didn’t care who heard him. All he wanted was the warmth of Aaron’s embrace, the soothing comfort of his lover’s voice telling him that everything would be okay. Rune wrapped his arms around himself, rocking back and forth as the tears came in torrents. He cried for what felt like hours, overwhelmed by confusion and fear, until he drifted into an uneasy sleep under the stars.
When Rune woke, the sun was already high in the sky, but it did nothing to comfort him. He was lost, both physically and emotionally, deep in the woods with no idea how to get home. Panic set in as he searched his pockets for his phone, but it was gone. Tears welled up in his eyes again, and his throat tightened. He felt utterly helpless.
As the hours passed, Rune’s body grew weaker from hunger and exhaustion. The fear of being lost in the forest forever gnawed at him, and he couldn’t stop the tears from flowing again. As night began to fall, he collapsed against a tree, pulling his knees to his chest and burying his face in his arms. He didn’t know what to do. He just wanted to disappear.
Suddenly, Rune heard a voice. At first, he thought it was his imagination, but the sound grew closer. His heart raced with fear and hope as he listened carefully.
On the other side of the forest, Aaron was frantic. He had arrived at Rune’s family home only to find them all in a state of panic. His Bambi had run away, and no one knew where he was. The thought of Rune being lost and alone, terrified and in danger, made Aaron’s blood run cold. Without hesitation, he demanded to know where Rune could have gone. When Rune’s cousin mentioned the forest, Aaron’s heart sank. He knew the woods were dangerous, especially at night, but he didn’t care. Nothing could stop him from finding Rune.
“I don’t care how dangerous it is,” Aaron said coldly, his eyes blazing with determination. “I’m going to find him.”
Ignoring the pleas of Rune’s family to wait until morning, Aaron plunged into the forest, calling Rune’s name over and over as he ran through the trees. The further he went, the more desperate he became. His voice cracked as he shouted, his fear growing with every passing minute. He wouldn’t give up. He couldn’t.
Just as darkness began to fall, Aaron heard it—a faint sound, almost like crying. His heart leapt in his chest as he followed the sound, weaving through the trees until he saw him. Rune was huddled under a tree, his body shaking with sobs, his face buried in his knees. Aaron’s breath caught in his throat at the sight of him. His strong, beautiful Bambi was so small and vulnerable, broken in a way Aaron had never seen before.
“Bambi...” Aaron’s voice was soft but filled with emotion.
Rune lifted his head, his tear-streaked face lighting up with relief when he saw Aaron. Before he could say a word, Aaron was there, pulling him into his arms, holding him as tightly as he could.
“Grumpy... I was so scared,” Rune whispered, his voice trembling as he clung to Aaron.
“It’s okay, baby. I’m here now. You’re safe,” Aaron murmured, pressing a kiss to Rune’s hair as he rocked him gently. The feeling of Rune’s body against his, of knowing he was safe, made Aaron’s heart ache with both relief and sorrow. Rune was shaking like a leaf, his tears soaking Aaron’s shirt as he cried harder, the fear and confusion of the past day finally catching up to him.
“I just want to be with you,” Rune sobbed into Aaron’s chest. “I don’t want anyone else. I don’t care about anything else. Just you.”
“I’m not going anywhere, Bambi. I promise.” Aaron’s voice was firm, but filled with love as he held Rune closer, vowing silently to protect him from everything, even fate itself. He would never let Rune feel this broken again.
They sat there in the forest, wrapped in each other’s arms, until Rune’s sobs finally quieted into soft whimpers. The tension in his body eased, and before long, he had fallen asleep, his face resting against Aaron’s chest, his breathing slow and steady. Aaron looked down at him, his heart breaking at the sight of his love so exhausted and fragile.
“I’ll protect you, Bambi. Always,” Aaron whispered, brushing a stray lock of hair from Rune’s forehead. He kissed the top of Rune’s head softly, cradling him as though he were the most precious thing in the world—because to Aaron, he was.
With Rune safely in his arms, Aaron made a silent vow to shield him from the pain that fate had thrown their way. Whatever the future held, they would face it together. No matter what.
