soojin's pov
As the plane began its descent, my heart raced with a mix of exhilaration and dread. The familiar landscape of Seoul unfolded beneath us, the city I had longed to return to now coming into view. But as we touched down, a wave of anxiety crashed over me. Not only had I quit my job and moved back, but I also had to face my parents who still had no idea what I'd done.
What would they say? Would they understand? The fear twisted in my stomach, battling against the thrill of starting anew. I couldn't shake the thought of their disappointment, the sacrifices they'd made for my education now feeling heavier than ever. I had wanted to chase my dreams, but the reality of my choices loomed over me like a storm cloud.
After the plane taxied to a stop, I gathered my belongings, my hands trembling slightly as I clutched my sketchbook. I made my way toward the baggage claim, trying to focus on the excitement that should be bubbling inside me instead of the weight of my secrets. The terminal buzzed with life-families reuniting, friends celebrating, and travelers rushing past me, each immersed in their own stories. I felt out of place in the chaos, my heart pounding with every step.
As I waited for my suitcase, I mentally rehearsed the conversation I'd need to have with my parents. Would I call them from the airport? Or wait until I got home? I was still deliberating when I felt a light tap on my shoulder. I turned around, and my breath caught in my throat.
"Mina!" I exclaimed, my surprise quickly melting into joy. "What are you doing here?"
She grinned, her eyes sparkling with excitement. "I couldn't let you start this journey alone! I came to welcome you home!"
A rush of relief flooded over me, banishing some of the anxiety that had clung to my chest. "You have no idea how much I needed to see a friendly face" I said, my voice softer now.
"Of course! We're going to make this unforgettable" she declared, pulling me into a quick hug. I could feel the warmth of her enthusiasm wrap around me like a comforting blanket.
As we approached the carousel, I glanced around at the familiar surroundings-the signs in Hangul, the distant sounds of laughter, and the smell of street food wafting from vendors outside. It felt invigorating, but the gnawing worry about my parents crept back in.
"Hey, are you okay?" Mina asked, her tone suddenly serious. She must have sensed my unease.
I took a deep breath, glancing down at my hands. "I just... I didn't tell my parents I quit my job. They don't know I'm back yet. I don't know how to explain everything to them."
Mina nodded, her expression thoughtful. "That's tough. But you can do this, Soo-jin. You're following your passion! They might be surprised, but they love you. They'll want you to be happy."
Her words offered a small comfort, but the knot in my stomach tightened. "I just hope they understand. I wanted to pursue my dreams, but it feels so reckless."
"Sometimes you have to take risks to find your path" she said, her voice steady. "And you're not alone in this. I'm here for you."
Just then, my suitcase finally appeared on the carousel, and I grabbed it, thankful for the distraction. As we made our way through the airport, Mina filled the space with her vibrant energy, detailing all the places we could explore together. I tried to focus on her excitement, but the looming conversation with my parents still lingered in the back of my mind.
Once we stepped outside, the fresh air hit me like a wave, the city bustling with life. "Look at this place! Isn't it amazing?" Mina exclaimed, her eyes shining.
"It really is" I replied, feeling a mix of nostalgia and hope. I was back where I belonged, and that had to count for something.
As we walked toward the parking area, I felt a flicker of determination spark inside me. I would tell my parents. I had to. But for now, I'd allow myself to soak in the joy of being back home. With Mina by my side, I felt a little less afraid.
Together, we set off into the vibrant streets of Seoul, ready to embrace whatever adventure awaited us.
