Obanai held Mitsuri's hands, his palms sweaty as his heart raced in his chest. The words felt heavy, stuck in his throat, but he knew this was the moment. He couldn't wait any longer.
"I-I... uh, Mitsuri, you know we've been friends for a long time," he started, his voice shaky with nerves. Mitsuri's bright eyes blinked in surprise as she listened closely. "But... I don't think we should be friends anymore."
Mitsuri's expression immediately shifted to confusion, her smile faltering as she stepped back. "Iguro-san, what are you saying? What do you mean?" Her heart sank a little, worried that he was pushing her away. Was this not what she had been hoping for?
Obanai took a deep breath, summoning every bit of courage he had. He clenched his fists before relaxing them, lifting his gaze to meet her eyes. "What I mean is... we shouldn't be just friends anymore. We should be more than friends. I-I..." He shut his eyes tightly, the words rushing out in a jumble. "I love you, Mitsuri. I've loved you for so long, longer than I can even remember. I... I've been too scared to say it, but I can't hold it back anymore. I love you."
His confession was raw, filled with all the emotion he had held back for years. His heart pounded in his ears as he waited, afraid of how Mitsuri would respond.
Mitsuri's eyes widened, her breath catching in her throat. Her cheeks flushed pink as his words finally sank in. Before Obanai could finish, she squeezed his hands tightly, her own eyes sparkling with joy. "I love you too, Iguro-san," she whispered, her voice soft but firm. "I've loved you for so long too. Longer than you could ever know."
Her face lit up with happiness, the blush on her cheeks deepening as she gazed at him. "I love you so much," she added, her voice full of warmth.
Obanai felt a rush of relief wash over him. He let out a breath he hadn't realized he was holding, his heart lighter than it had ever been. Their eyes met, and for a moment, it felt like the world had stopped spinning, leaving just the two of them standing together in that perfect sunset.
With trembling hands, Obanai gently cupped Mitsuri's cheek, leaning in closer. His voice was barely a whisper as he spoke, "I've waited so long to tell you, and now that I have..." He hesitated, but then he closed the distance, pressing his lips softly against hers. The kiss was tender, filled with all the affection they had kept hidden for so long. It was sweet, gentle, and full of promise.
When they pulled back, their foreheads rested against each other, both of them breathing softly, hearts still racing.
Obanai's voice was quieter now, full of hope as he continued, "After graduation, I want you to be..."
But before he could finish, a loud voice interrupted them.
"Oooooo, finally, bitch, you did it!" Tengen's loud voice rang out, followed by the sound of clapping.
Startled, both Obanai and Mitsuri whipped their heads around, only to see Tengen, Giyu, Shinobu, Sanemi, and Kyojuro approaching them. Tengen was grinning mischievously, his arms crossed in satisfaction, while Giyu held up a camera, capturing the entire moment.
"Nice choice of words and place, Iguro," Giyu said, smirking as he snapped another picture.
"Congratulations!" Shinobu chimed in, stepping forward to grab Mitsuri's hands with a warm smile.
"Hmmm, congratulations, both of you!" Kyojuro boomed, his voice full of brotherly pride. "I'm so happy for you guys!"
"Finally, you did it, buddy," Sanemi added, patting Obanai's back, looking amused.
Obanai, however, was fuming. He had specifically told them not to interrupt his moment with Mitsuri. He wanted it to be private, just the two of them, under the sunset. And now, his best friends had completely ruined that!
"What the hell are you idiots doing?" Obanai exploded, his face turning red, both from anger and embarrassment. "I told you not to come here! You were supposed to give us space!"
But instead of backing off, Tengen just laughed louder, clearly enjoying the moment. "Relax, Iguro! We weren't gonna miss your big confession, especially since we've been waiting for months for you to finally grow a spine and tell her."
"Besides, this was too good to miss," Giyu added, still holding the camera as he captured Obanai's furious expression.
Obanai sighed, his frustration simmering, but when he looked back at Mitsuri, she was laughing too, her eyes filled with happiness. Despite everything, she was happy. That was all that mattered.
"Fine, fine," Obanai muttered under his breath, shaking his head in defeat. "You guys are unbelievable."
Mitsuri giggled, squeezing his hand gently. "It's okay, Iguro-san. It just makes this moment even more special."
Obanai couldn't help but smile softly at her, his heart swelling with love. Even with his friends ruining the moment, he was still the happiest he'd ever been. And as the sun finally dipped below the horizon, he knew that this was just the beginning of something beautiful.
