The park was quiet, with only the sound of leaves rustling in the gentle breeze and the distant chatter of people walking by. Nicole sat on a bench near the pond, nervously tapping her foot. She hadn't seen Devin since their last conversation, and her stomach was doing flips just thinking about what he might say today.

A few minutes later, she saw him walking toward her. He looked calm, but there was something in his eyes—something that told her he was just as anxious as she was. His hands were in his pockets, his shoulders slightly tense, but as soon as he saw her, he gave a small nod.

"Hey," he said softly as he approached.

"Hey," Nicole replied, offering him a small smile. She scooted over on the bench to make room for him to sit.

Devin sat down next to her, the space between them feeling heavier than it usually did. Neither of them spoke at first. The silence lingered, the weight of their last conversation still hangin' in the air.

Nicole took a deep breath and decided to be the first to break the silence. "So... I've been thinking a lot about what you said the other night."

Devin nodded, his eyes on the pond in front of them. "Yeah?"

"Yeah," she said, her voice soft. "It just—it caught me off guard, you know? I never thought about us like that. I always saw you as... my best friend. The person I could count on for anything."

Devin's jaw clenched slightly, and he finally turned to look at her. "And that's still true, Nic. I ain't gonna stop bein' there for you. But I can't keep actin' like I don't want more."

Nicole bit her lip, her heart racing as she looked back at him. "I get that. And honestly? It's scary. Because I don't want to lose what we have."

Devin let out a small, frustrated sigh, running a hand over his face. "I don't wanna lose it either, Nic. But I can't keep playin' this role, watchin' you from the sidelines. It's killin' me."

Nicole felt her heart twist at the emotion in his voice. She had never seen Devin so raw, so vulnerable, and it made her realize just how much he had been holding in.

"I know," she said quietly, her voice shaky. "I know it's not fair to you. But I need to be honest with you too. I don't know if I'm ready for this."

Devin stared at her, his eyes searching her face for some kind of answer. "What are you scared of?"

Nicole swallowed hard, feeling her throat tighten. "I'm scared that if we try this and it doesn't work... we'll lose everything. Our friendship, the connection we've had all these years. What if we can't go back to the way things were?"

Devin shook his head, a sad smile on his face. "Nic, we can't go back to the way things were. Not after all this. But that don't mean we can't move forward."

Nicole looked at him, really looked at him, and for the first time, she saw the depth of his feelings. This wasn't just a crush. Devin was all in. And she knew that if she wasn't careful, she could break his heart.

"I just need time," she whispered, her voice barely audible. "I need to figure this out."

Devin nodded, his gaze softening. "Take all the time you need. I ain't goin' nowhere."

They sat there for a while longer, neither of them speaking, but the silence felt different now. It wasn't heavy with unsaid words—it was full of possibility. Nicole wasn't sure where things would go from here, but for the first time, she didn't feel as scared. She felt...hopeful.

Later That Night

Nicole lay in bed that night, staring up at the ceiling. Her mind was still racing, but there was a sense of calm that hadn't been there before. She had told Devin the truth, and he had understood. He wasn't pressuring her, and that meant everything.

But still, the questions lingered. Could she really see herself with Devin? Could she take the risk and turn their friendship into something more? She didn't know the answers yet, but for now, she was willing to take things one step at a time.

As she drifted off to sleep, her phone buzzed on the nightstand. She reached over, half expecting it to be Devin. But when she unlocked the screen, she frowned.

It wasn't Devin. It was from an unknown number. The message was simple, but it sent a chill down her spine: You don't know what you're getting into.

Nicole sat up, her heart racing. What did that mean? And who would send her something like that?
