Chapter 71: The Calm Before the Storm

A few weeks had passed since Nicole and Devin shared the news about the baby, and life had settled into a comfortable rhythm again. The excitement in the house was still fresh, especially with Amani constantly talkin' about bein' a big sister. She would ask questions every day—about the baby, what it would look like, and what kind of toys she could share. It was clear she was already takin' her role seriously, and it warmed Nicole's heart to see it.

Nicole's pregnancy was still early, but she was feelin' good. No major symptoms yet, and she was grateful for that. She knew things would get tougher as the months went on, but for now, she was enjoyin' the calm.

Amani's Curiosity

One afternoon, while Nicole was sittin' on the couch with her feet up, Amani crawled into her lap, restin' her little head against Nicole's belly.

"Mama, how long until the baby comes?" Amani asked, her big eyes filled with curiosity.

Nicole smiled, brushin' Amani's hair out of her face. "It's gon' be a while, baby girl. Babies take a long time to grow in Mama's belly. But when the baby's ready, we'll let you know."

Amani nodded, seemin' satisfied with the answer. "I hope the baby's a girl. Then we can play with my dolls together."

Nicole laughed softly. "We'll see, sweetie. Either way, the baby's gon' love playin' with you."

As Amani ran off to play with her toys, Nicole felt a wave of peace wash over her. She loved watchin' Amani embrace the idea of havin' a sibling, and it made her feel even more certain that they were ready for this new chapter.

Preparing for the Baby

As the weeks went on, Nicole and Devin started thinkin' more about what they needed to prepare for the baby. They had most of Amani's old baby stuff still stored away, but they wanted to refresh a few things—especially since they didn't know yet if they were havin' a boy or girl.

One Saturday morning, Devin suggested they head to a few baby stores to start lookin' at what they might need.

"I know it's early, but it don't hurt to start lookin'," Devin said as he pulled on his jacket. "Plus, Amani been buggin' me 'bout baby stuff since you told her."

Nicole chuckled, grabbin' her purse. "Yeah, she's more excited than we are. Let's do it. I been wantin' to look at some new stuff anyway."

They loaded Amani into the car, and the three of them headed to the mall. As they walked through the baby section, Nicole felt a familiar excitement rise up inside her. It had been so long since she had shopped for baby clothes, toys, and cribs, and now here they were again, startin' over.

Amani ran from rack to rack, pointin' out everything she liked. "Mama, look! This would be so cute for the baby!"

Devin chuckled as he watched her. "She already takin' this big sister thing serious."

Later that night, after they had put Amani to bed, Nicole and Devin found themselves in their bedroom, goin' over the list of things they needed for the baby. The room was quiet, just the two of them, reflectin' on how much their lives were changin' again.

Nicole smiled back, feelin' the reassurance in his words. "Yeah, we do."
