Kevin stood in front of Marissa's house; his hands tucked into the pockets of his black hoodie. He wore black pants and white canvas sneakers, with a black bag slung over his back. His fluffy brown hair slightly shifted in the breeze as he glanced at the time on his phone. Taking a deep breath, he knocked gently on the door, waiting for a response.
Soon enough, the door opened, revealing Marissa. Her short ginger hair was pulled back into a ponytail, and she wore joggers and a sleeveless shirt.
"You're here early?" Marissa remarked with an awkward smile. "I'm not exactly ready, as you can see."
"Oh, I can tell," Kevin shrugged. "Not surprised."
Marissa stepped aside, allowing Kevin to enter the house. The door closed behind him with a soft thud.
"You're the only one here?" Kevin asked as he glanced around the empty house. The living room was simple, with white couches and a patterned carpet on the floor. A few flower vases stood in the corners, and a flat-screen TV was mounted on the wall.
At the far end of the room was the dining area, centered by a long glass table decorated with a basket of fruit and more vases. Black chairs surrounded the table, and a door at the back likely led to the kitchen.
"Yeah," Marissa shrugged. "My parents are at work, and, well, you know about my sisters."
Kevin nodded in understanding.
"Well, I need to get dressed. I'll be done soon," Marissa said as she walked towards the corridor. "You can sit and wait."
Kevin turned his attention back to the living room and sank into one of the couches, an exhausted sigh escaping his lips.
'Why exactly am I picking her up? She knows where the mall is,' Kevin thought, baffled by his own actions.
'But knowing her, she'd probably get distracted by something and end up lost. Yeah, that's why,'he mused, convincing himself with a smirk.
Minutes passed, and Kevin decided to distract himself by scrolling through his phone. Eventually, Marissa emerged from her room, and walking toward the living room.
"I'm ready," Marissa called out, causing Kevin to stop scrolling and stand up.
Marissa wore a short white skirt paired with long socks and flat pink shoes. She had on a light pink sweater, and her short ginger hair was curled with a soft touch of makeup, holding a small white bag.
"Finally," Kevin muttered, glancing at Marissa's outfit but quickly looking away to avoid her noticing.
Marissa walked toward the door and opened it, with Kevin following closely behind. He stood for a moment, watching as she locked the door.
"Why are you wearing a hoodie on a sunny day?" Marissa asked as she finished locking up and the two started walking down the pavement.
"Because it's comfortable," Kevin shrugged.
"If you say so, Coach," Marissa chuckled.
