It was strange, really strange. That thought occupied Kevin's mind as his keen eyes studied Marissa's every move and expression.
He couldn't shake the feeling that something was off about her. The once energetic, impulsive, and bubbly girl was now quiet and reserved.
It started on Sunday during their training when the red-haired girl remained silent throughout the session. He didn't like it; it made him really uncomfortable.
It was Wednesday, and he was determined to discover what was bothering her. Kevin sat at his desk during the first period of the day, glancing at the empty table where she usually sat, her habit of arriving late for class occurring once more.
His gaze shifted to the chatting twins at their table, their faces bright and charming. He considered asking them if they knew what was going on with her. Thoughts like these filled his mind, and his patience was growing thinner by the moment.
Soon enough, he notices Marissa walking into the room, her face reserved and expressionless as Mr. Rivera scolds her for her tardiness.
After their private talk, Marissa starts walking toward her desk, her gaze avoiding the stares of her friends.
"Mari!" Jina exclaimed, hugging her excitedly. "We were just talking about your birthday."
Kevin's eyes widened at her words. Birthday? He noticed how Marissa's face paled at the mention, her discomfort becoming evident.
"Don't get too excited," Chul said softly. "Marissa doesn't like to celebrate her birthday."
"Yeah, Jina, a simple 'happy birthday' will be fine," Marissa said, breaking the hug with a forced smile.
Jina sighed loudly at her words. "You always say that. You deserve a party! We can finally get the group back together. I know a nice spot in—"
"No, Jina." Marissa interrupted her abruptly. "Thanks anyway."
Jina's face fell at her response. "I guess some people don't really like extravagant parties."
Marissa smiled at her words. "Definitely."
Kevin watched the interaction, his face filled with amusement as he studied Marissa's words.
'Throwing a party is an attention grabber, and Marissa likes being the centre of attention,' Kevin thought, confusion etched on his face.

The school day was coming to an end. Kevin stood beside Marissa as they walked down the pavement in silence. He glanced at her momentarily, noticing her blank and distant expression—a look she couldn't even conceal while speaking to her friends today.
'She is bad at hiding her true emotions,' Kevin mused before taking a deep breath.
"I heard your birthday is coming up?" he stated calmly.
Marissa flinched at his words before nodding. "Yes, this Saturday," she replied softly.
"It's not a big deal, so just forget about it," Marissa deflected, trying to downplay its importance as she chose to walk faster, leaving Kevin behind.
