I did this to her. I caused her all this pain. No one else but me. I have been merciless, I have plenty of people's blood on my hands, but it is this that nearly cripples me with guilt.
I hurt my mate.
Deep in my soul, I know she will never forgive me if I send her over to Calytrix and make her work for her but it is the best solution. I can not have her close to Phanes and Kano. It is too risky and she is so innocent.
I just got her, though. I don't want to lose her, not like this, and definitely not before I can tell her everything I need to tell her. I stare at the woman that I am destined to love.
It as if time is frozen in place. There is nothing or anyone else in this room besides the two of us. Her hair messy around her head, her makeup smudged and ruined by fears and tears. My angel has never looked more beautiful.
My temptation must be protected.
I swallow down the guilt, tense my jaw, and for a second I think of her and me somewhere far away from here. But that can't happen, not now, not with this threat looming over us. I make my decision.
"Do it." She doesn't need to see what I am about to do to her "creator." I will make him regret ever touching a hand on Nerissa.
Nerissa lets out a wail that penetrates my soul. I nearly stumble at the impact that it has over me. I can not let myself mourn her openly, I can't and yet my heart aches so painfully I think puking it out is the only solution.
Phanes spits towards her and my heart burns at the sight. "You have fallen, Nerissa."
Then with a quickness, he slaps her so hard across the face that it knocks her unconscious. Nerissa's body hits the ground limply and I take a step forward. Phanes cuts his eyes at me, glaring into my soul.
A group of demons come from the shadows and I have to wonder how long they were watching. I recognize a few of them as Calytrix's henchmen. They take Nerissa's body into their hands before tossing her into the back of a carriage.
I do not say anything, Knoxx is the only one to scream out by my side. I barely blink as I try to remember every detail on her body. I will make sure he pays for it all. Then the carriage jolts forward and the darkness swallows Nerissa Solely.
I will be back for her. I will always come back for her.
