Eric sat with me and Alex at dinner. We ate in silence until Eric stood up.
"I'll be right back," he said as he left. A few minutes later the dauntless began to bang their cups on the table. I swallowed the lump in my throat as we all looked up at the ledge. Max and Eric stood there looking grim.
"As some of you already know and some of you don't, we lost a dauntless member today, not just a member but a dauntless leader. Candy passed this afternoon," he paused, gasps filled the dining hall and I looked around, seeing the shock on people's faces as they lifted their cups in the air. Max lifted his own. "Let's drink to Candy."
Everyone took a swig from their drinks and began to cheer.
"The memorial will be held straight after dinner in the pit!" And with that, Max stepped back. I heard a few whispers of people asking about what was going to happen to Belle. Eric rejoined us a few minutes later and we finished our dinner. We all headed to the pit afterwards, I let out a gasp as I saw the everyone holding a lit candle. The sight was miraculous. Alex rolled over with three candles. He handed me one and Eric one before he pulled out a lighter. He lit his candle then passed it to me. I lit my candle and stared at the flame.
"Goodbye Candy," I whispered as I held back tears. I felt Eric's hand snake around my waist.
"We'll miss her." He whispered. I nodded as I blew out my candle. I handed the candle to Alex before pulling away from Eric.
"I need a drink." I stated as I walked away from them. I heard Eric's heavy footsteps rush after me.
"Sam," he called, when I didn't stop he grabbed my arm and pulled me round to face him. I immediately pulled myself into his chest and wrapped my arms around him tight. He seemed shocked by my actions as it took him a few seconds to hug me back.
"I'm never going to get used to this." He laughed.
"What?" I asked, not pulling away.
"Actually having someone want to hug me." He answered. I let out a laugh.
"I'm glad I'm the only one, no one will steal you away from me." I answered.
"Oh they couldn't if they tried." He stated. I pulled away and stepped to the side, my arm still hanging around his waist.
"Let's go get that drink," I suggested and he happily obliged. He walked with me slowly through the halls of dauntless, which was surprising. Eric is actually sad. I never thought I'd see it. We went to the bar, Eric got me a drink. We both sipped from our glasses gingerly sitting in silence.
"Do you think I'll pass tomorrow?" I asked, my eyes wandering up his body to meet his. He was sitting slumped on the stool, his eyes diverting from in front of him, to the side to look at me. He seemed disappointed.
"Of course." He answered plainly. "With the right motivation, you can do anything, initiate."
My mouth dropped open as I stared at him.
"You've said that before.." I mumbled. "Eric, you've said that before."
"I know." He answered. Before I could open my mouth to answer, I felt a hand on my shoulder. I turned around to see Tris and Christina. My mouth dropped open at the sight, what did they want?
"We'd like to apologise about accusing you of cheating your way through." Christina stepped forward. I could see Eric scowl from beside me so I put my hand on his to reassure him.
"It's alright." I answered. I wasn't in the mood to fight. I was deflated. My friend had died. If I don't make peace now, then when?
"Do you want to take a walk with us?" Tris asked. I jumped down from the stool, Eric quickly grabbed my shoulder making me turn to him.
