The Fray- How To Save A Life

"Candy," I whispered as I rubbed her hand gently. "Today's the practise for the fear landscape."

She didn't reply anymore, she couldn't move. She was near the end. I'd been here every single day after seeing Belle. I described her daughter to her and how she was growing. I had told her all about Eric and Jack. I even had told her about Alex. The one thing I hadn't told her was about where I came from. I sniffled as I looked at her. She was cold, so cold. But the nurses said she couldn't feel pain. She didn't know she was dying. It made me feel at ease a little bit.

"You're going to be alright, Candy. Everything is going to be alright. I'm going to look after Belle." I told her. "When I'm finally a member of dauntless tomorrow, I'm going to take such good care of her." I told her. "I have to go, Candy. I'll see you afterwards."

I stood up and kissed her on her forehead like I did everyday. It was time for my last practice.

I headed to the room where we'd be doing our fear landscapes. Only this time, I was last. The lowest ranking initiates were to go first, meaning I had to wait a very long time. When it was my turn to go, I walked in, confidently. I was not confident, not at all.

"Sam, it's great to see you again. Your results were rather impressive last time, so I heard. Lets see how you get on in my fears again." Lauren, the woman who was I trucking the dauntless born initiates training said as she lead me over to the chair in the middle of the room. "Do you remember what you have to do?"

"Yeah, hit me up," I said, making Lauren laugh.

"Remember you'll only be faced with one of my fears." She reminded me and I nodded as she injected me with the serum. She was gentler than Four and Eric. Much gentler.

"Heights." I stated, as I realised I was on top of a flat roof. I walked to the edge of the roof and looked down. Damn, this is high. I'll only jump if I have to. I walked around the edge of the roof, smiling when I found what I was looking for. A ladder. I climbed over the side of the building, hoping that my steady hands didn't fail me as they were now shaking. I let out a shaky breath as my feet landed on the cold metal. I gripped onto the sides of the ladder and made my way down.

I sat up. My breathing ragged as I saw Lauren smile.

"Well done, that was brilliant." She told me and I smiled. Thank god that's over. "You're going to ace it tomorrow."

"I'm nervous." I answered. More nervous than i've ever been in my life. What if I can't do it?

"Oh honey, you have no reason to be nervous. Go on kiddo, get out of here." She shooed. I left the room quietly, I was on my way to tell candy how it went when I saw Alex, Eric and Max standing outside of the infirmary. Well, Alex was sitting in a wheelchair but I knew something was wrong.

"Sam," Max greeted, "Are you-"

"Here to see Candy, yes." I cut him off quickly, my heartbeat rapidly rising. I kept my eyes on Eric, who couldn't look at me.

"I'm sorry-" I didn't listen to what Max had to say, I just walked around them then ran into the infirmary. I ran to her bed only to see that it was empty. My heart stopped. I stopped breathing. Tears fell down my cheeks and I had no intention of stopping them. I felt a hand on my shoulder. I knew it wasn't Eric or Alex. It must have been Max. Only then did I breath again. My breath was shaky and long, before I began to hyperventilate.

"No," I breathed, my voice breaking.

"She left you this, Sam." Max said as he placed a pink envelope in my hand. And with that I was left staring at Candy's empty bed. I sat in the chair I would normally sit in, my finger tips running over Candy's writing. The front of the envelope said 'Sam'. I slowly opened it, as if it was that fragile it could shatter if I went too fast. As I pulled the piece of paper out of the envelope I bit my lip.
