"Jack?" I whispered as I heard a twig snap behind me. I spun around, my breathing suddenly increasing, fear suddenly flowing through my veins. "Jack!" I whisper shouted, suddenly becoming angry. "Jack, I swear to god, if you're messing with me right now the past 15 years of friendship is over!"
We'd been friends ever since we were kids, we were inseparable, everyone called us, "double trouble." We were so mischievous, so being outside in the woods at 3am wasn't abnormal for us, only I'd been waiting in our usual spot for 45 minutes and he hadn't turned up. Normally I would hear him climb the treehouse to find me so we could plan our troublesome acts but tonight, he hadn't turned up.
As I was walking back, feeling deflated, never have we ever blown each other off. Never. I didn't know what to feel apart from betrayed. I began to get apprehensive of my surroundings. It suddenly seemed a lot more scarier without Jack here. It seemed a lot more dangerous.
"Jack please, stop messing around." I said, my voice stern, my body beginning to shake with fear. At that moment I got a gut instinct.
Run.
I turned on my heel, sprinting through the dark woods, dodging the trees and hearing the sticks crunch underneath my steps. I could hear something following me, their footsteps were heavy, snapping many twigs as they did so. It only made me run faster. That was until I ran into someone.
"Ow!" They called as they fell onto the floor. I knew that voice. I quickly scrambled up.
"Jack, get your ass up! We've got to go, now!" I informed him. He let out a laugh.
"Why?" He asked as he stood up and shook himself off. "Sorry I'm la-" a sound of a large growl behind us stopped him in his tracks. "Oh shit, Sam, run!"
And that we did. Nothing could be heard over the grunting of what was chasing us. We'd heard about the creatures made after the war, the chemicals creating ungodly beasts, but we thought it was just a myth. We'd all laugh when our parents told us stories about them, we thought they were just stories.
But who's laughing now?
"Shit! Shit! Shit!" I breathed, seeing our city lights draw closer throughout the trees. There's a reason for the curfew. There's a reason for the guard patrolling the city, and we'd found it. The thing was getting closer, it was definitely getting closer. Before we knew it, we were saved.
Bang.
I let out a gasp of relief as I stopped and turned around, hearing nothing but silence behind us and the sounds of Jack and I's breaths. A hand grabbed my upper arm making me struggle, only to see that it was my dad.
"Samantha." He said sternly, "what are you doing out here?"
I panicked, no words could leave my mouth and I looked over at Jack for some help, but it seemed it only made the situation worse.
"Get home, both of you. Samantha, you and I will be talking when I get home. Jack, I will be speaking with your parents in the morning." Dad told us, he scared me, my dad.
"You can't do that! We're 18!" Jack protested making my dad growl and grip my arm harder. I let out a whimper.
"In case you haven't noticed boy, I make the rules around here, and you'll do well to obey them." He was head of our guard and we were out past curfew. I cringed at the thought of what he meant by 'talking'.
Jack and I rushed home. We knew that he would have at least an hour before my dad got back as he and his team needed to take care of the beast. We sat on his front lawn for a while.
