The sky was a pale grey, threatening snow, and our breath formed small clouds in the chilly air.
Dozens of carriages lined up along the path, their thestrals pawing at the frozen ground impatiently.
"Write me if you get bored."
Astoria said, squeezing me tight. Her perfume, a mix of vanilla and jasmine, enveloped me.
"I feel bad you being here all on your own over Christmas."
I pulled back, offering her a reassuring smile.
"Don't worry about me, I have Riddle to keep me company."
I gestured towards Mattheo, who was laughing with Theo and Enzo.
The sound of his laughter carried on the wind, making my heart skip a beat.
Astoria's eyes darted to him, then back to me.
"Please don't kill each other." She pleaded, only half-joking.
I giggled as we walked to join the boys, our boots crunching on the frosty grass.
"Can't promise anything." I teased.
Theo enveloped me in a bear hug, his woollen scarf scratching my cheek.
Enzo, however, hung back, his posture stiff and guarded.
The events of last night — the kiss during truth or dare and Pansy's disappearance — seemed to hang in the air between us, unspoken but palpable.
"Pansy left on the earlier train." Enzo muttered, not meeting anyone's eyes. "Didn't even say goodbye."
An awkward silence fell over our group, broken only by the sound of trunks being loaded onto carriages and the chatter of excited students around us.
As our friends began loading their luggage, Mattheo and I hung back.
I could feel the warmth of his body next to mine, our hands almost touching but not quite.
"Lyanna."
The familiar voice made me turn.
Sebastian stood a few feet away, a small, forced smile on his face.
His usually perfectly styled hair was slightly tousled by the wind.
"I'll be right back." I murmured to Mattheo, feeling his eyes on me as I walked over to Sebastian.
"Hi."
I said awkwardly, tucking a strand of hair behind my ear.
The memory of ditching him at the ball hung between us like an invisible barrier.
