It was the first day Mira had ever felt something like a hint of excitement about P.E. class at Crestview High. She wasn't known for being athletic, and the idea of participating in sports often made her stomach churn with anxiety. But that morning, something had shifted. Maybe it was the fact that Lucas had given her a quiet word of encouragement before class, or maybe it was the simple need to escape the constant weight of Ethan's presence. Whatever it was, Mira found herself standing before the mirror in the locker room, hesitating over one small detail she had never bothered with before—tying her hair back.
Her fingers trembled as she gathered her long, dark hair into a ponytail, the strands falling neatly around her face. It wasn't much—just a small adjustment to her usual routine. For once, Mira didn't just pull her hair into a messy bun or let it hang loose in a way that might get in the way. This shows a slight softness to her features, an almost innocent look, as if she weren't the target of so many cruel jokes, as if she wasn't defined by the people who had made her their punching bag.
The ponytail made her look fresher, more approachable, and almost cute, though Mira wouldn't admit that to anyone, least of all herself.
As she stepped onto the gym floor, the noise of the other students echoing around her, Mira couldn't help but feel the familiar, uncomfortable sensation of being watched. The basketball courts were set up in the center of the gym, and as usual, she gravitated toward the perimeter, staying on the fringes of the action.
But then she saw him—Ethan.
It wasn't like she was actively looking for him, but he had this way of filling up the space around him, making his presence known without even trying. Mira felt the shift in the air as his eyes swept across the gym, catching her glance for a brief moment. For a heartbeat, their eyes locked, and in that second, Mira couldn't shake the feeling that something about her was different to him today. She wasn't sure why, but the way his eyes lingered on her made her stomach twist. It was only a moment, but it felt like an eternity.
Ethan didn't say anything. He didn't even acknowledge the fact that their eyes had met. But Mira was acutely aware of the way his gaze had briefly softened, even if it was for just a fraction of a second.
Shaking off the feeling, she found her place in the assigned group for basketball. As usual, she was with a mix of students—some who didn't care about the game, others who were just there to pass time, and then, of course, Ethan.
She felt her heart sink as the teacher blew the whistle, signaling the start of the game. Mira was on defense, the ball bouncing between players, and she did her best to keep up, her awkward movements betraying her inexperience. The ball came her way quickly, and she barely managed to keep up with the fast pace.
It was then that the ball came flying toward her—faster than anything she had seen. It was a blur, aimed straight at her face.
In an instant, Mira flinched, bracing for impact. She knew she wouldn't be able to react in time. But then, something unexpected happened.
A figure lunged toward her, shoving her aside with a rough hand, his body blocking the ball. The ball ricocheted off his chest and bounced harmlessly away. Mira's heart raced, her breath catching in her throat.
She turned, startled to see Ethan standing there, his face neutral, though there was a brief flash of something in his eyes—something that might've been concern, but it was hard to tell beneath his usual icy demeanor.
"What the hell are you doing?" Ethan snapped at her, his voice harsh. "You need to focus. That ball was coming straight for your face."
Mira's breath caught in her throat as she tried to find her footing. "I—I didn't expect it to come so fast," she stammered, barely able to meet his gaze.
