Mira stepped through the school gates, her head low and her heart heavy. The whispers and stares were no longer new, but they still pierced her like shards of glass. She tightened her grip on her bag and willed herself to walk faster.

Ethan was waiting. She knew he would be.

And she was right.

He was leaning casually against her locker, his arms crossed, his dark eyes already locked onto her as she approached. His presence was suffocating, his smirk a weapon aimed directly at her.

"You're late," he sneered as she reached him.

"I'm... I'm sorry," Mira stammered, her voice barely above a whisper.

Ethan rolled his eyes. "Sorry doesn't cut it, Mira. You were supposed to finish my math assignment last night. Where is it?"

Mira's hands shook as she fumbled to pull the papers from her bag. She held them out to him, her gaze fixed on the floor.

Ethan snatched them from her grip and glanced at the pages. "This is sloppy," he muttered. "Did you even try? Or is this just your usual half-hearted effort?"

Mira swallowed hard, her throat dry. "I... I did my best."

"Your best?" Ethan's voice rose, drawing the attention of nearby students. His hand now tugging her hair. "Your best is garbage, Mira. You can't even handle a simple assignment. No wonder you're always stuck at the bottom."

The hallway grew quieter as more students turned to watch. Ethan's voice, sharp and unforgiving, echoed in the silence.

"Hey!" A voice cut through the tension, strong and commanding.

Mira turned her head, her eyes widening as she saw Lucas striding toward them, his expression dark. He reached her in seconds, stepping between her and Ethan like a shield.

"That's enough, Ethan," Lucas said, his tone low and steady.

Ethan raised an eyebrow, his smirk returning. "And who invited you to this little party?"

"I'm inviting myself," Lucas shot back. "Leave her alone."

Ethan let out a cold laugh. "Oh, so you're her knight in shining armor now? How cute."

Lucas didn't flinch. "I'm serious, Ethan. If you don't back off, you'll regret it."

Ethan's smirk vanished, replaced by a dangerous glare. "Regret it? You think you can threaten me?"

The tension in the hallway was palpable, every student holding their breath as the two boys squared off.

"She's not your punching bag," Lucas said, his voice growing louder. "You think you can just treat her like trash because you're some big shot? Not on my watch."

"Stay out of this," Ethan snapped, his voice like venom. "This is between me and Mira. It has nothing to do with you."

"It has everything to do with me," Lucas replied. "Because I won't stand by and let you keep hurting her."

Ethan's hands clenched into fists. "You're really starting to piss me off, Lucas."

"Good," Lucas said, his voice unwavering.

Before anyone could react, Ethan's fist shot out, landing squarely on Lucas's jaw. The impact echoed through the hallway, and gasps rippled through the crowd.

Lucas staggered but didn't fall. Instead, he swung back, his fist connecting with Ethan's cheek in a brutal arc.

The fight exploded into chaos.

Ethan lunged at Lucas, slamming him against the lockers with a force that made them rattle. Lucas retaliated, driving his knee into Ethan's stomach before pushing him away.

Students scattered, some yelling for a teacher, others pulling out their phones to record. Mira stood frozen, her hands pressed to her mouth as she watched the scene unfold.

Ethan tackled Lucas to the ground, the two of them grappling fiercely. Fists flew, each blow landing with sickening force. Blood trickled from Ethan's nose, but he didn't stop. If anything, it seemed to fuel his rage.

"You think you're so righteous?" Ethan snarled, pinning Lucas down. "You think you can just walk in and play hero?"

Lucas grunted, using all his strength to flip them over. He landed a punch on Ethan's jaw, his knuckles splitting from the impact. "Someone has to stand up to you!"

The crowd grew louder, the chaos escalating with every passing second.

Ethan shoved Lucas off him and staggered to his feet, wiping the blood from his nose. His eyes burned with fury as he lunged again, his fist connecting with Lucas's ribs. Lucas doubled over, gasping for breath, but managed to deliver a swift kick to Ethan's shin, sending him stumbling.

The two boys circled each other, their movements wild and unrestrained.

"Enough!" Mira's voice rang out, desperate and trembling.

For a moment, they both froze, their heavy breaths filling the silence. Ethan turned to look at her, his expression unreadable, while Lucas wiped the blood from his lip and straightened up.

"Stop." Mira said, her voice shaking. "Please... just stop."

Ethan's jaw tightened, his fists still clenched. His gaze shifted back to Lucas, his eyes narrowing.

"This isn't over," he muttered before turning on his heel and storming away, shoving past the crowd of onlookers.

Lucas watched him go, his chest rising and falling with labored breaths. He turned to Mira, his expression softening. "Are you okay?"

Mira nodded, though her legs felt like they might give out at any moment.

"You don't have to put up with this," Lucas said gently. "You deserve better."

Mira looked away, her eyes filling with tears. She didn't know what to say, didn't know how to explain the tangled mess of fear, shame, and confusion that Ethan had left in his wake.

Lucas sighed, placing a reassuring hand on her shoulder. "If he comes near you again, you tell me. I mean it, Mira."

She nodded again, her voice caught in her throat.

As Lucas led her away from the crowd, Mira couldn't help but glance back. Ethan was gone, but the echoes of his anger lingered, seeping into her like poison.

And deep down, she knew this was far from over.
