Mira had been working non-stop, as usual, her gaze glued to the screen as she went through the countless emails and tasks. She barely noticed the slight dizziness that had been creeping up on her all morning, and if she did, she pushed it aside with the same determined focus she always had. But this time, it wasn't enough.

As she stood up to grab a file from the printer, the world tilted suddenly. The cold, hard floor seemed to rise up at her, and then everything went black.

She collapsed, hitting the floor with a soft thud, the room spinning around her in an uncontrollable whirl. Her colleagues rushed over, panic setting in as they realized something was terribly wrong.

The news of Mira's collapse spread quickly throughout the office, and Ethan was among the first to react. His heart leapt into his throat when he heard the commotion. He didn't wait for any explanation; he bolted from his office, rushing down the hall to find Mira lying motionless on the ground.

"Get the paramedics," Ethan barked to his assistant, his voice tight with panic. His breath quickened as he knelt down beside her, his hands hovering over her like he was afraid to touch her. But his mind was racing, and something deep inside him screamed that he couldn't lose her.

It felt like hours, though it was likely only minutes, before the paramedics arrived. They quickly took over, placing Mira on a stretcher and wheeling her out of the office. Ethan followed them closely, his mind racing with a thousand thoughts. He had never felt this way about anyone before—his chest was tight with anxiety, and he couldn't shake the feeling that something was terribly wrong.

At the hospital, the doctor quickly took over, but for Ethan, the waiting was unbearable. He paced outside the room, his eyes never leaving the door, as he prayed for any sign that she was okay. Time seemed to stretch on forever, and with every passing minute, his heart pounded louder in his chest. He had seen Mira go through so much already—her grandmother's passing, the distance between them growing—and now, this.

It was nearly impossible to focus on anything but her.

Hours passed, and just when Ethan felt like he couldn't take it anymore, a nurse appeared in the hallway, her face calm but with an undercurrent of concern.

"She's awake," the nurse informed him, "But the doctor is still with her. I'll let them know you're here."

Ethan nodded quickly, a weight lifting from his chest, and he rushed toward the door, only to be stopped by the nurse's next words.

"She asked not to speak to you just yet," the nurse added softly, her tone apologetic. "She wants to speak to the doctor first."

Confusion flickered in Ethan's eyes, but he didn't press the issue. He stood back, waiting, the anticipation nearly choking him. He heard the quiet murmur of voices from inside the room, and a sense of unease settled over him.

Minutes later, the door finally opened, and the doctor stepped out. Her face was serious, but she wasn't offering any answers yet. Ethan's heart skipped a beat.

"How is she?" he demanded, his voice sharp, though a layer of worry was evident.

The doctor looked at him, her expression unreadable. "She's stable for now, but there's something important we need to discuss."

Ethan felt his stomach drop. "What's going on? Is she alright?"

"She's awake and coherent," the doctor replied, her tone softening slightly. "But there's something we need to address about her condition."

Before the doctor could continue, the door to the room opened again, and Mira appeared in the doorway. Her face was pale, her eyes tired, but she held herself with a quiet strength. Ethan immediately stepped toward her, his concern evident.

"Mira," he said gently, reaching out as if to steady her. "Are you okay?"

She looked at him, her expression blank. Then, in a voice far more fragile than he had ever heard from her, she spoke.

"I'm fine," Mira said quietly, her words clipped, though her gaze never quite met his. "You don't need to worry."

Ethan frowned. "You collapsed. Of course I'm worried."

But Mira simply shook her head, taking a slow, careful step away from him.

"Don't," she said, her voice firm despite the exhaustion in her features. "I don't want you to worry about me."

The doctor watched the exchange for a moment, and then she stepped in, her voice calm but with a note of professionalism. "Mira, I need to speak with you about your condition. Can we sit down?"

Mira nodded reluctantly, and she allowed herself to be guided back to the bed. The doctor turned to Ethan.

"I'll give you a moment," the doctor said, excusing herself, though her gaze lingered on Mira for a moment longer than necessary.

Once alone, Mira took a deep breath, and the doctor began her examination. When the doctor finally spoke, her words hit Mira like a ton of bricks.

"Mira, the tests came back," she began carefully, "and it appears you have a severe, life-threatening condition."

Mira felt a cold shiver run down her spine. "What... what do you mean?" Her voice trembled, despite her best efforts to control it.

The doctor continued, her tone steady but solemn. "You have a condition that, if left untreated, will worsen over time. It requires an expensive surgery to fix—surgery with a high success rate, but there is a risk of memory loss due to the impact it may have on your brain."

Amnesia.

Mira's mind went blank, the room feeling smaller and smaller with each word. A life-threatening illness. An operation that could save her, but at such a high cost... and the risk of losing memories.

"No," she whispered, shaking her head slowly, her chest tightening. "I don't want the surgery."

The doctor looked at her in surprise. "Mira, this could save your life. You don't have much time—if you don't do anything, it will only get worse."

"I don't care," Mira said softly, her voice raw. "I don't want to do it. I don't want to live like this."

The doctor seemed taken aback by her response. "But Mira, you can have a full life after the surgery. You could recover and—"

Mira interrupted her, her voice trembling with an edge of finality. "No. I don't want to be a burden. It's okay... it's okay if I die. Everyone has to go eventually, right?"

The words hung in the air between them, thick and heavy. The doctor watched her for a long moment, sensing the finality in her tone, the exhaustion that was far deeper than her physical state.

"I can't force you to do anything," the doctor said softly, her voice filled with compassion. "But I'm here to help you. Whatever you decide."

Mira nodded, closing her eyes as she felt the weight of everything settle over her. She wasn't sure if she was making the right choice, but in that moment, it felt like the only one she could make.

As the doctor left, Mira was left alone in the room, her thoughts spiraling. She knew she couldn't keep this from Ethan, but she couldn't bear the thought of him looking at her with pity. Not now. Not after everything.

She turned her gaze to the window, watching the world go by, and for the first time, she didn't know how to face tomorrow.
