The evening had settled into a quiet calm, the last remnants of the day's hustle fading as Mira walked alongside Lucas. Her heart still ached from the fight with Ethan, and despite everything that had happened between them, the weight of the past continued to press on her chest. As they walked away from the school gates, the world seemed too large, too overwhelming, like it was swallowing her whole. But Lucas, walking quietly beside her, somehow made the night feel less suffocating.
"You don't have to thank me again," Lucas said, his voice steady, but there was an undercurrent of something softer. His gaze lingered on her, his eyes filled with something she couldn't quite place.
"I do," Mira whispered. "I don't know what I would have done if you hadn't been there." She swallowed hard, the words catching in her throat. "Ethan... he's so relentless. I can't fight him alone."
Lucas looked over at her, his brow furrowing slightly. "You shouldn't have to fight him at all," he said, his tone hardening slightly. "No one should treat you the way he does."
Mira didn't answer right away. She kept walking, her eyes fixed ahead. The thought of Ethan, his cruelty, and his anger toward her—it all seemed like a weight she couldn't shake off.
As they reached the corner of the street, Lucas slowed his pace, the air around them growing thick with unspoken words. Mira felt it too. She had never really opened up to anyone about what had happened, what had truly set everything in motion. But tonight, for some reason, she felt like she could.
"Lucas," she began, her voice small, "there's something I never told you. The reason Ethan treats me the way he does... it's because of me."
Lucas stopped walking, his expression softening, though there was a flicker of confusion in his eyes. "What do you mean? What did you do?"
Mira hesitated, her mind rushing back to that moment, that terrible moment she had tried to bury so many times. She closed her eyes for a moment, then exhaled slowly, gathering her thoughts.
"It happened a few days ago," she started, her voice shaky. "I was riding my bike home from work... just a normal day. And... and I wasn't paying attention when I crossed the street. There was this car, and I didn't see it coming. I didn't even hear it until the impact threw me off my bike, sending me crashing onto the pavement. It hurt. Everything hurt. But what hurt more was the panic in the woman's voice." She paused, swallowing hard, the memory still fresh, the sting of it still sharp.
She glanced at Lucas, trying to gauge his reaction, but he was silent, watching her with rapt attention, waiting for her to continue.
"The woman... she was so worried about me. She was kneeling beside me, asking if I was okay. And then... and then another car came speeding toward us. She shoved me out of the way just in time, but... she didn't make it. She was hit. The woman who had been so kind to me... she died."
The words hung in the air like a dark cloud. Lucas took a step closer, his eyes wide with disbelief.
"She was his everything.," Mira whispered, her voice breaking.
Lucas's breath caught in his throat. He had heard rumors, of course. Everyone had. But hearing it from Mira—he could see the devastation in her eyes, the way her hands trembled as she spoke. He could see that she had been carrying this guilt for so long, and it was destroying her.
"I—I didn't know it was her, Lucas. When I was riding home, I had no idea. I wasn't trying to hurt anyone. I wasn't trying to—" Mira's voice cracked, and she pulled her knees up to her chest, her arms wrapping around them tightly. "But when I found out... when I realized what had happened, I couldn't breathe. I couldn't think. It was all my fault. Ethan... he blames me for her death. That's why he hates me. That's why he's always so cruel."
Lucas stood motionless for a moment, the weight of her words sinking in. His heart ached for her—so much pain, so much regret, all bottled up inside her, and yet she still carried it, still tried to shoulder the burden. His hand hovered over her shoulder, unsure if he should comfort her or let her be, but he couldn't stand seeing her like this.
"I'm so sorry, Mira," he said quietly. "You don't deserve to carry that kind of guilt. It was an accident, something no one could have predicted."
Mira looked up at him, her eyes glossy with tears she refused to shed. "But I should have seen it coming. I should have been more careful. She was trying to help me. She didn't deserve what happened. And now Ethan... he can't even look at me without seeing his mother's death. He hates me for it."
Lucas gently placed his hand on her arm, his grip firm but gentle, as though offering her the reassurance that she wasn't alone in this. "Ethan is angry. I can see that. But this isn't your fault, Mira. He's just lashing out. His pain... it's eating him up, and you're just caught in the middle of it. You don't have to be the one to fix him."
Mira let out a shaky breath, trying to steady herself. "I don't know if I can keep going like this. I don't know how much more I can take. It hurts, Lucas. It hurts so much."
Lucas's eyes softened, his voice lowering to a whisper. "You don't have to do it alone. I'll be here, Mira. I'll always be here."
For the first time in a long time, Mira felt a small flicker of hope in her chest. The weight of everything was still there, the guilt, the pain, but Lucas's words—his presence—were like a balm on her wounded soul. She didn't know how to accept his comfort, didn't know how to tell him what he meant to her, but for that moment, she allowed herself to believe that maybe, just maybe, there was something to look forward to.
"Thank you, Lucas," she whispered, her voice barely audible. "I don't know what I would do without you."
Lucas gave her a soft smile, his eyes filled with warmth. "You don't have to worry about that," he said, his tone full of quiet conviction. "I'm not going anywhere."
And as they sat together in the fading light of the evening, Mira allowed herself to feel the smallest hint of peace, knowing that maybe, just maybe, she didn't have to carry her pain alone any longer.
