Ethan walked through the mall, his steps purposeful but his mind elsewhere. The week had been unusually busy, and he was feeling the weight of the constant demands at work. As he passed by a jewelry store, a glimmer of something caught his eye. A delicate necklace in the window seemed to call out to him, its diamond pendant sparkling in the light.

Without really thinking, he walked inside. The cool air of the shop greeted him, and the scent of expensive perfumes lingered in the air. The staff immediately approached, eager to assist.

"Good afternoon, sir. Looking for something special?" the saleswoman asked with a polite smile.

Ethan nodded, his gaze fixed on the necklace he had seen through the glass. "That one," he said, pointing toward it.

The saleswoman's eyes lit up, clearly pleased with his choice. "A beautiful selection, sir. This necklace is one of our finest. A gift for someone special?"

Ethan hesitated for a moment, then gave a slight shake of his head. "Not exactly," he muttered, almost to himself.

"Your girlfriend is very lucky to have such a romantic boyfriend," the saleswoman continued, clearly taking his interest in the necklace as a sign of affection.

Ethan stiffened slightly, the word girlfriend sounding strange in his ears, but he forced a neutral expression. "She's not my girlfriend," he said coldly. "Just an employee."

The saleswoman blinked, momentarily thrown off, but quickly recovered. "Of course, sir. I'll have it wrapped for you."

The next day, Mira walked into Ethan's office, her usual professional demeanor in place. She was used to his abrupt manner, and today, the silence between them felt even thicker than usual. As she placed the files on his desk, Ethan's voice broke through the stillness.

"Mira," he said, his tone firm but not unkind, "close your eyes."

Mira raised an eyebrow in surprise. "What?"

"Close your eyes," he repeated, his voice unwavering.

Confused but not wanting to argue, Mira complied. She shut her eyes, her heart rate picking up as she waited for whatever strange thing Ethan had planned.

A few moments of silence passed before she felt a cold touch at her neck. She flinched slightly, feeling the chain of something soft against her skin. Ethan's presence was close, his breath near her ear as he carefully clasped the necklace around her neck.

"Open them," he said shortly.

Mira opened her eyes, her gaze immediately falling to the sparkling necklace now hanging around her neck. Her hand flew to the pendant, fingers grazing the cool metal as she stared at it in disbelief.

"Ethan," she said softly, her voice trembling with confusion. "Why—why are you giving me this?"

Her mind flashed back to school days, when Ethan had been nothing but a cruel bully. How he had stolen her phone and, with an ease that now seemed haunting, guessed her password: 2602. Her birthday. She hated that number now. It reminded her of the worst parts of her life.

Ethan stood before her, his eyes unreadable. "It's a gift for your hard work," he said flatly, his tone cold as always. "You can throw it away or sell it if you don't want it."

Mira's heart pounded in her chest, the bitterness of their shared history gnawing at her insides. She wanted to refuse, to throw the necklace back at him and storm out of the office. But something held her back. Something told her she had to fight the urge to reject it. Maybe it was because this was the first time he had ever done anything for her—anything that didn't feel like a cold command or a sneer behind her back.

"I don't want it," she said, her voice low, as if the words were a declaration of war. "I don't need anything from you."

Ethan's eyes narrowed slightly, but he didn't argue. He didn't say anything more. The silence between them grew heavy, thick with unspoken tension.

Mira turned to leave, her fingers still gripping the necklace as if it were some sort of lifeline. She reached for the door and paused, glancing over her shoulder. Ethan's voice, soft but still firm, reached her ears.

"Happy birthday," he said, his words colder than the air around them.

Mira felt her chest tighten at the words. She wasn't sure if she was more hurt by the coldness of his voice or the sincerity she almost thought she had heard beneath it. With a final glance at him, she stepped out of the office, the door clicking shut behind her.

---

Later that evening, as Mira walked home, the weight of the necklace felt heavier than it should have. She stared at the pendant in her hand as she walked, its beauty both comforting and irritating at the same time. She had lived through so many things, so many years of hurt, and now she was here, still trying to make sense of Ethan's actions.

She couldn't understand him. He had been cruel to her in the past, and now he was giving her gifts like this, like a twisted apology. But was it really an apology? Or just another way to show his control, his dominance? Was he trying to prove something? Or was it really just about her hard work?

She had no answers.

In his office, Ethan leaned back in his chair, staring at the papers in front of him. But his mind wasn't on work. It was on Mira. The necklace. Her eyes when she opened them. The surprise, the hesitation, the refusal. He could almost hear her voice saying it, the weight of it in the air.

But he hadn't expected her to take the necklace. He hadn't expected her to do anything at all. And yet, part of him had hoped she would say something. Anything. Even if it was just to yell at him, to scream, to curse him out. But she hadn't. She had taken the necklace, and that silence had been louder than anything she could have said.

He couldn't get rid of the feeling that something had changed between them. But what? Was it just him noticing her more? Or had she changed, too?

Ethan rubbed his temples, trying to shake off the gnawing sensation in his gut.

He didn't deserve her. He knew that much. His past was full of mistakes. His behavior towards her had been nothing short of despicable. He had hurt her, made her feel small, insignificant, and now he was trying to make up for it? Was it too late for that?

He wasn't sure.

But what he did know was that seeing her so distant, so emotionally closed off, made him feel something he wasn't ready to confront. He had always thought of himself as incapable of feeling anything that deep. But now...now it was different.

Every time he looked at her, the knot in his chest tightened. Every time she distanced herself, he felt it. He wanted to care for her, to make her feel something. He wanted to show her—he wanted to prove to her—that he wasn't the same person who had bullied her all those years ago.

But how could he? How could he make up for the things he had done?

The weight of the necklace, the weight of his own emotions, pressed down on him, and Ethan realized—he was falling. Falling for Mira. Harder than he ever thought he could.

And yet, he couldn't shake the feeling that she deserved someone better. Someone who wasn't broken by his past. Someone who could love her without hesitation.
