The car ride was heavy with tension. Ethan's eyes were fixed on the road ahead, his jaw clenched tight as his thoughts churned inside him. He could feel Mira sitting next to him, the silence between them stretching out longer with every mile.
He knew she was upset—hell, he was too, but the difference was, he didn't have a clear reason for it. The night was supposed to be about business, but it had turned into something else entirely. Something personal. Something messy.
The music played softly in the background, but neither of them seemed interested in it. Mira stared out the window, her gaze distant, her lips pressed into a tight line. Ethan knew she wasn't happy about being there, but he didn't know what to say to break the silence. Every word he'd spoken earlier had felt like an intrusion. Even his apology, though it was genuine, hadn't seemed to change the air between them.
After a few moments, Mira's voice cut through the stillness.
"Where are we going?" she asked, her tone flat but tinged with curiosity.
Ethan didn't immediately answer. He was still trying to figure out what he was doing. His mind had been racing since the moment he'd left the venue.
There had been something about that old man's comment that had pushed him to his breaking point. The anger had been swift, but the irritation lingered in the air like smoke.
"I thought we could just... get away from everything for a bit," he said after a long pause. "Just... breathe. It's been a stressful night, and we both need to clear our heads."
Mira didn't respond right away, but he could see from the corner of his eye that she was frowning.
"I just want to go home," she muttered under her breath, her voice barely audible.
Ethan kept his eyes on the road, his grip tightening on the steering wheel. He wanted to say something—to convince her that they both needed a break, that they needed to unwind from the weight of their respective worlds. But he didn't. He didn't know how to convince her of anything anymore.
The minutes ticked by, and before either of them could say much more, the car rolled to a stop. The sound of the waves crashing in the distance reached them first. Mira glanced out the window, blinking at the sight.
"What is this place?" she asked, her curiosity piqued despite herself.
Ethan didn't answer immediately. He just opened the door, stepping out of the car and waiting for her. Mira hesitated but eventually followed, her heels clicking softly against the ground as she approached him. They were at the edge of a beach, the waves lazily rolling in and out against the shore.
A small park stretched out beside them, filled with families, children running along the sand, couples walking hand-in-hand. The soft hum of conversations and the laughter of children filled the air, mingling with the wind.
Ethan adjusted his coat, and as he did, he noticed Mira shivering slightly in the breeze. Without a word, he pulled the coat from his shoulders and draped it over her, the fabric warm and heavy against her. She didn't protest, but neither did she thank him.
It was an unexpected gesture, and though he didn't understand why he did it.
They stood there for a moment, side by side, watching the water. The wind was gentle, tousling their hair, and the moment stretched out as they walked silently along the shore.
There are moments, their hands accidentally brushed against each other.
The first time it happened, neither of them acknowledged it. But the second time, Ethan felt a strange flutter in his chest. He quickly pulled his hand back, pretending not to notice, but he couldn't shake the feeling that something between them was shifting. Something he didn't fully understand.
