The road was eerily quiet that night, the only sound being the rhythmic clinking of Mira's worn-out bicycle as she pedaled her way home. The air was heavy with the scent of rain, and the occasional gust of wind sent shivers down her spine. She was exhausted, her part-time job having drained what little energy she had left.
The dim light from the single streetlamp flickered as she turned a sharp corner. Suddenly, headlights blazed through the darkness, blinding her. She gasped, her hands instinctively jerking the handlebars, causing her bicycle to skid on the slick road.
A car came hurtling toward her.
The screeching tires and blaring horn were deafening. Mira froze, her body paralyzed as the car tried to swerve. But it was too late. The impact threw her off her bike, sending her crashing onto the hard pavement.
Everything spun. Pain shot through her body, but it was the panic in the driver's voice that jolted her back to reality.
"Are you hurt? Can you hear me?"
Mira's eyes fluttered open, her vision blurry. A woman knelt beside her, her face pale with worry. Her elegant dress and diamond earrings gleamed faintly under the streetlamp. Despite the panic in her voice, there was something undeniably kind about her.
"I... I think I'm okay," Mira managed, though her knees throbbed and her palms were scraped raw.
The woman sighed in relief, placing a gentle hand on Mira's shoulder. "Thank God. Let me help you up—"
Before she could finish, the sound of another car speeding toward them shattered the stillness. Mira's eyes widened in horror as the headlights came closer, far too fast to stop in time.
"Move!" the woman yelled.
Mira tried to push herself up, but her legs wouldn't cooperate. In an instant, the woman shoved her out of the way with all her strength. Mira hit the ground again, the breath knocked out of her.
The sound of the crash was deafening.
When Mira turned back, her heart stopped. The woman lay motionless on the road, her once graceful figure now broken under the car's impact.
"No..." Mira whispered, crawling toward her on trembling limbs. "No, no, no..."

Hours later, Mira sat in the hospital's waiting room, her head bowed and hands shaking. The faint hum of fluorescent lights buzzed overhead, an unwelcome reminder that the world kept spinning despite what had just happened.
The woman's name had been whispered by the nurses: Margaret Carter. Mira felt the ground shift beneath her when she realized who she was. Ethan Carter's mother.
Her chest tightened with guilt. She hadn't meant for any of this to happen. How could she face him now?
The waiting room door burst open with a loud crash, startling her out of her thoughts. Ethan stormed in, his presence filling the room like a storm. His sharp, handsome features were twisted with raw emotion—fury, grief, disbelief. His eyes locked onto Mira, and she felt like she couldn't breathe.
"What did you do?" he growled, his voice low but trembling with anger.
Mira tried to speak, but her throat felt dry, her voice barely a whisper. "It was an accident... I—"
"An accident?" Ethan's voice rose, cracking at the edges. "You think that makes it better? My mother is dead because of you!"
Mira's body stiffened, the word dead hitting her like a punch to the chest. Her eyes filled with tears as she struggled to explain.
"She... she saved me," Mira choked out. "She pushed me out of the way—"
"She wouldn't have needed to save you if you weren't in the middle of the damn road!" Ethan yelled, his voice breaking.
Mira flinched, tears streaming down her face. "I'm sorry... I'm so sorry..."
"Sorry?" Ethan repeated bitterly, his fists clenching at his sides. "You don't get to be fucking sorry. My mother is gone. She's gone, and it's your fault!"
His words were like daggers, cutting deeper than anything he had ever said to her before. Mira couldn't hold back her sobs, guilt and grief consuming her.
Ethan stared at her for a moment, his chest heaving, his face a mix of fury and something else—something shattered. Without another word, he turned and stormed out of the room, leaving her alone with the crushing weight of what had happened.
---
From that day on, Ethan's cruelty toward Mira changed. It was no longer the taunts or pranks of a schoolboy, but a colder, deeper resentment. Every time their eyes met in the hallways, Mira saw the anger burning behind his gaze, a constant reminder of what she had taken from him.
And yet, in the quietest corners of her mind, she wondered if the guilt she carried mirrored the pain he was trying so desperately to bury.
