The past three years had been a slow and quiet torment for Ethan. On the surface, his life seemed as polished and structured as ever. His company had flourished under his leadership; deals were signed, partnerships formed, and profits soared.

To the outside world, Ethan Carter was the epitome of a successful, stoic businessman. But no one saw the cracks in his armor—the empty apartment he returned to every night, the untouched meals on his kitchen table, the weight in his chest that never seemed to lift.

He had thrown himself into his work, trying to bury thoughts of Mira in deadlines and meetings. But she was everywhere. He would catch himself staring at the empty chair in his office, imagining her there with her quick wit and fiery glares. He would drive by her old apartment and slow down, hoping against hope to see her shadow in the window.

Late at night, when he allowed himself to let his guard down, he would pull out the photo tucked into his wallet—a picture he had taken years ago on a whim.

It was of Mira standing by the ocean, her back to the camera, a bouquet of flowers in her hands. It was taken at the beach where they had once gone together.

He didn't know why he had kept it, but it had become his anchor.

Ethan tried to move on, but no one else ever came close. Every attempt to connect with someone new fell flat. They weren't her. They didn't have her laugh, her sharpness, her warmth. He told himself he should be happy knowing she was alive, out there somewhere, living her life. But deep down, he knew the truth.

He missed her.

He missed her in a way that consumed him.

One warm afternoon, he found himself at the very beach where the photo had been secretly taken. He hadn't planned to come here; his car had simply turned in that direction as if pulled by some unseen force.

He walked along the shore, the waves crashing gently at his feet.

The salty breeze tugged at his clothes, and for the first time in a long while, he let himself breathe.

His thoughts were interrupted when he accidentally bumped into someone.

"Watch where you're going," he muttered under his breath, not even sparing a glance at the person he had collided with.

He kept walking, his focus already slipping back into his thoughts. But then, he heard a voice behind him—clear, soft, and achingly familiar.

"Excuse me, sir! You dropped your wallet."

Ethan froze.

The world seemed to tilt on its axis as he turned around slowly. His heart raced as his eyes landed on her.

It was her.

Mira Winters stood a few steps away, holding his wallet out to him. The sun framed her face, highlighting her radiant features. She looked different—more mature, more composed—but still unmistakably Mira.

The necklace he had given her all those years ago glinted around her neck, catching the light like a beacon.

Ethan's throat tightened. He tried to speak, but no words came. His chest felt heavy, like he was drowning in a flood of emotions he hadn't allowed himself to feel in years.

"Sir? Are you okay?" Mira asked, tilting her head in confusion.

Her voice—it was the same voice he had dreamed of, the voice he thought he might never hear again.

He swallowed hard, blinking back the tears that were threatening to fall.

"I... I'm fine," he managed, his voice barely above a whisper.
